New fines etc starting this month
Discussion
Read in the Times last Friday about new fixed Penalties for no MOT or no insurance. Not too sure how it will work but figures used included where you are caught driving on the public highway with no insurance you would receive an automatic £200 fine. Anyone else read this? I’m in court in June charged with no insurance wonder if this ‘fixed’ fine will apply or if it’s still a case of the means form and the magistrates ‘discretion’ ( i.e. if you earn money we’ll hammer you if you scank off the state you’ll have a £20.00 fine) Madcop ***999*** Bob The Bench etc? any comments on this and if so any where I can find out more…..
And from Jan 04 cars that have not had the road tax fund renewed within 2 weeks past it’s expiry will receive a fixed £80.00 fine a SORN will have to have been completed in advance to avoid this…

Wait on! I have always taxed my cars and bikes!! Always.
WITH one exception i.e last year my bike was knocked over by a woman when she reversed into a parking space which was already occupied by said bike just as the tax renual was due. My bike was off the road for two months.
So the bike wasnt on the road . What happened to inocent until proven guilty? I would have got a fine for that! As soon as mike bike was fixed I went and taxed it!(and got a load of grief in the end I used the sorn and paid the 2 months I didnt use anyway)

Thats the point of the SORN though, for those 2 months you just say its off the road and you dont pay tax. I dont really see what you're getting at?
What I am trying to say probably badly is that isnt it only an offence if you take an un taxed vehicle on the road?
If its in my garage its not an offence so why should I get a fine for not taxing it? why dont they have to prove you have been using it?
or have things changed or am I just wrong
I didnt think you had to tax something just because you owned it. Yes I understand you can tell them you are not using it but why should you have to.
Like I say I always tax my cars and I believe everyone else should also.

i was told by a bloke at the dvla that they werent realy bothered about cars with out-of-date tax discs unless it was over 6 weeks since it ran out(that was in january when i was declairing s.o.r.n. on the cortina im customising)
it pisses me off when i see untaxed cars as i have always taxed mine,as for the £200 fine for no insurance.....big deal, the fine has been from 200-600 for years at uxbridge and great yarmouth courts (seen it at both)

Ah, yeah I see what you mean, the fact that you have to tell them your car is off the road or they will assume it isnt, rather than being reasonable and doing the opposite. Yes that does suck, but then it's hardly surprising in this country!
£200 for not having insurance? For a young driver you can therefore get caught 5 times before it is cheaper to get insured!
£60 for a speeding fine
£200 for no insurance
is that proportional? I worked hard to pay a £1000 insurance premium last year and it pi$$es me right off when some little tw@t thinks he can get away without paying it.
What happens when you wipe out some old dear crossing the road because you cant see out of you slammed Civic because the seat is so far reclined? Answer: Bugger all.
£200 fine? More like £2000 and a ban in my opinion.

i have reached a coclusion about the 1600 effin L im doing.....THE SHELL IS FCUK'D
today i have had the pleasure of removing the ziebart from the inner wings and found the front end is held together by will power, which is a major pain as the car looked alot more solid and had stood up well to the 'hit everything with a rubber mallett' test (the sills were solid, the floor pan was o.k but the chassis rails had got to the 'im falling apart but you wont see it as i am hidden behind ziebart' business)this has bought me to a sad conclusion, the shell has to go!
but fear not,the carousel is getting better every day and im looking at a new cortina project tomorrow and i will post pics of that a.s.a.p.(i will try to include pics of the carousel and the pics of the rot in the 1600 effin L aswell)
it has left me in the position of having alot more spare parts though, including a sweet 1600 ohc engine,a set of twin choke nikki carbs,a couple of alternators,a set of 4 good and solid doors,an excellent bootlid,2 brand new wings,a p100 bull-bar,a new exhaust system and alot more!
anyone want to buy a set of 15 inch rial alloys?

Dunno if ya know this mod mate, the 1600 head fitted to the 2.0 litre block is a good performance upgrade.
The reason it works, is that the ports on the 2.0litre are far too big, and they cause fuel drop out, puddling and poor port velocity.
The 1600 head has smaller ports so they work a heck of a lot better on the 2.0litre than the 2.0 litre head does.
Hope this is something thatll help ya out.

cheers deltaf,i havnt thought of that.
i will fill you in with the info on the condition of the 'new' project car.i am just thinking of restoring the bodywork, sticking a 3.0 essex in and using it as a 'sleeper' as the car is in too good nick to start slicing up for customising.
oh well,at least the father in law will drive me their
and the carousel will get a run tomorrow (and as usual, plenty of stares from the numpty's as they get overtaken by a 22 year old cortina driven by a 63 year old petrolhead!!)
