Police forces all over the UK are seeking powers to take samples, not only from speeding drivers, but from people who drop litter, too.
This revelation comes as the UK’s DNA database is going to be investigated due to concerns that there are a disproportionate number of children under 10 and ethnic minorities on the register.

EXACTLY.I used to be a defence barrister.
Try this for size.
1. Government want to fit you up for a crime.
2. Government want DNA evidence linking you to the scene
3. Government follow you to the pub, and pick up the cigarette end you drop on the floor with your saliva on it.
4. Government bag the fag end
5. Said fag end is found at the scene of the crime, linking you to the crime via the database information they got when they nuicked you for speeding.
Simple.

I have a problem with it, because it isn't just speeders. It is propsed that minor offences (non imprisonable ones) give the police the right to take a DNA sample. IMO, this is just going to criminalise a huge amount of the population, and can easily be abused by unscrupulous officers. I don't have a problem with those who commit serious offences (rape, murder, assault) having a DNA sample being taken, as these people will most likely commit (or have committed) other offences.

But if DNA evidence is so portable, how come cases have not been thrown out beefore, setting a precedent? V966?
I can see that there are downsides to this, but aren't there also a lot of positives to. I'm sure a few years ago when "quality of life" or "zero tolerance" Policing was trialled in some areas they found that those who went around dropping litter etc where often the selfish members of society who had no respect for others, and where statistically hugely more likely to have committed a serious crime.
Perhaps it's the speeding offences that most people object too, and I personally think this is one step too far, but I think the general principle is correct. Accumulating this DNA would clear up many unsolved murders/rapes and other serious crimes. I'd be happy to suffer a small inconvenience to remove a lot of these people from the streets!! We could see some long overdue justice handed out.

Does anybody know where you stand legally to tell the copper where to go when he asks for your DNS sample ?
Are you entitled to tell him to "urinate away" (re-worded for obvious reasons) or will you be legally obliged to provide the sample ?
I know that when your asked for a breath test, if you refuse, they can take you in for failing to provide a sample as they suspect you of being under the influence and that you have something to hide.
Surely this doesn't fit the same category, if a copper asks me for anything short of "blow into this sir", i'm afraid that he can go and swivel !

No, the government will slowly but surely try to introduce a national DNA database by the back door. The problem is the government have a proven track record of seriously 
ing up every IT project they ever tackle.DNA database says you're guilty? That's it, you're making friends with Mr Big in the showers despite the fact that there will be trained monkeys doing all the data input.
