news: for immediate release
In the early hours of Tuesday 7th August 2007, Paul Smith, 52, founder of the
Safe Speed road safety campaign suffered a heart attack. After initial
treatment at Raigmore Hospital in Inverness he was transferred to Aberdeen
Royal Infirmary where his recovery continues. He is likely to remain in
hospital until Tuesday 14th August.
Speaking from his hospital bed, Paul Smith, founder of SafeSpeed.org.uk, said:
"Obviously I will take a necessary pause for the sake of my health, but I vow
to battle on against bad road safety policy founded on speed cameras. My own
heart attack is a stark reminder about the importance of doing everything we
reasonably can to preserve life."
"I'm delighted with my recovery so far and feel very well. I wish I could say
the same about British road safety policy."
"We haven't seen the road safety improvements that we are entitled to since the
introduction of speed cameras and I know why - it's because the priorities are
all wrong. Unimportant things are receiving great attention while important
things are neglected. The important things that we are neglecting include
management of driver quality and effective roads policing."

I know this man suffer stress for some time with one thing und another. He need support. He make biggest waves on shoestring budget without the commercial fallals which Mary has.
But it take its toll. He carry one heck of a weight. I respect him. I not agree all the time .. but by und large - he do talk sense und he make people sit up und listen regardless. He deserves support und friendship.
I wish him all the best. My thoughts with him und his family.

ocks!!! Closely followed by SH1T!!
Paul, please take things easy, you have a VAST amount of respect from not only PH'ers but those members of the general public who have realised, from your information, courageous direction and persistence in putting forth the truth, just what the great lie really is.
Hoping to hear of you back in the saddle, when you are ready.
Kindest regards
MoJo.

My sympathies.
Get well soon. If it's any comfort my Dad had one at 52 and lived to 77, so take it easy and all will be well.
It can be a warning. Lot of people suffer und manage to live to ripe old age. Paulie at possibly "danger age". Get well soon. If it's any comfort my Dad had one at 52 and lived to 77, so take it easy and all will be well.
He need oily fish.. olive oil in diet.. some gentle exercise.. but not necessarily cycling
Relaxation Hatha Yoga .. with Pilates "gentles" can help calm down. I did post up some 10 minute session on his site in the Cycling section once
I may resurrect that thread so that he has something to help und also others.
In meantime .. money troubles also add to worries. If anyone can spare the odd pound .. as Tesco say "Every Little Help"
For a man to put his career into limbo.. rely on odd donations from angry drivers.. but really work his socks off und succeed in making waves within the circles who support speed cams
.. on a shoe string budget without the sort of know how which only Mary Williams or other persons with "contacts of esteem" can achieve
He not have any of that. He ordinary bloke who get the plaudits by virute of common sense.
Good luck fella, and please take my advice below in the way it is intended - as a help, genuinely offered......
My Dad told me that when he had his heart attack in 1986, one of his buddies (who had an attack at 55 and was then 82...) told him, "it's not all over, son. Don't panic. Be careful, that's all it takes. It's warning. Nothing more."
A sight of your own mortality is a shocking an unsettling experience, but not always a negative one.
Take care of yourself from this day on. You won't appreciate this yet, but life is about to become a million times more precious, and this whole shocking episode will become a positive for your life in the fullness of time.
Life is a wonderful thing, appreciated by most only when it's too late. It's not too late for you. One thing I took from my father's experience is that you should live life to the fullest. Every day.
Hope you don't mind me pouring it out - I hope it helps. A little. Aftercare is SO good these days- you'll be fine.
God speed, Paul. You can PM me if you wanna talk.

This is going to be a difficult time for Paul. He relies almost entirely on Safespeed donations to both fund Safespeed activities and live on. Can I suggest that those who appreciate what he has done and wish him well might like to consider making a donation? If nothing else it will ease the stress he is under.
