Just an idea to allow drivers to be able to still have full concentration on the road (rather than their speed dials) when passing through a speed camera zone...

Maybe a speed limit button should be created so that when you are going through a speed limit zone you simply select 30mph and the car will still be under your control, but no matter how far you press down on the accellerator you cannot exceed 30mph. I think this would be a huge success. Speed cameras could even still be operated and people would instantly flick the 30mph limiter switch as soon as they enter the traffic controlled zone. I dont disagree with the idea of controlling speed and making sure the roads are safe. My point is that there ARE better ways to control it and newer ideas like my own need to be taken into account.

Many French shopping cars already have speed limiters (usually in with the cruise control buttons).

Seriously though, how much time does it take you to check your speed? It takes me no more than half a second and I don't have to do it very often to maintain a steady speed.

If one drives a car on the road regularly, then surely one knows what 30 feels like without looking at the speedo

All this will lead to is people paying even less attention, bored with their foot on the floor and not watching what's ahead. Would make overtaking milkfloats or cyclists interesting as well

Mercs have this feature built into the cruise control, you can use the cruise conventionally or set it to limiter and limit your speed to whatever you like. If you lift off the car will slow, if you need to go in a hurry you just plant the gas, as you hit the floor the limiter is deselected so if you are passing a truck and he starts to wander you're not floundering alongside.

I found it really useful in built up areas and roadworks.

It's just incredible that it didn't turn you into a dangerous mindless zombie, as some would have us believe.

in a way i'd love them to implement some sort of automatic speed control, then watch them wonder why there were still loads of crashes

Whoever said it would eliminate car crashes totally ?
The only way you'll do that is get rid of cars.

I remember seeing a program where they performed a motorway test with a 70mph limiter. Basically the driver had nothing to do, so began to lose concentration very quickly and start daydreaming. We certainly don't need any more of that on our roads, but I doubt they'd ever implement it. After all, where would the poor Camera Partnerships get their money from then?

My much simpler idea:

Scrap all the cameras (and the parasites who run them).

Job jobbed. biggrin

Is it really taking so much of your concentration that it is a serious problem for you?

Here's a better idea to reduce accidents - if you are such a feckless f'cktard that you are unable to tell what speed you are driving at through a 30 zone without staring intently at your speedometer, tear your license up, and post it back to the DVLA.

Sell your car and buy a bus ticket - I think if the vast majority of drivers I see did that, then the roads would be a lot safer (apart form the bus drivers, but that is a different story.....)

Surely this would be the first step for the government to track your car. You'll never be able to speed again. EVER!
