Not necessarily. Insurance depends on the company - not all are signed up to the Motor Insurance Database. If they are, then we can check. If not, and I can't get anyone on the phone (or you can't remember who insures you) its time for a producer.

Likewise tax isn't live. Markers get added to vehicles when they are a certain period overdue tax or if they are SORNed. Though you should be displaying the disc anyway wink

Sorry andy of course I am taxed and do display it I should have put MOT

They want my MOT and insureance docs. I know MOT is computerised becasue it nearly cost me another £25 for an indicator bulb smile "sorry mate its all computerised now we have to retest you because it failed and its on the computer so if we pass it now they will want to know why"

Anyway thats another story it wasnt orange enough smile

as far as the new MOT is concerned it is true that the paper MOT certificate now has not much more legal bearing than a receipt.

Indeed when you got your cert you should have also got a leaflet, unless they've stopped handing them out by now, which goes to great lengths that THE ONLY THING which proves a vehicle has a current MOT is the computer record.

I think its just ensuring that "they," whoever "they" are, (dons tin foil helmet) can find more ways that you will trip up.

Not got/displaying your documents sir?: Ah that'll be an offence under xxxxx, cash window that way sir.
Not produced your documents sir?: ah yes different cash window for that one sir.
Not got the documents at all sir? Not even just not got them with you?: Rubs hands, sit in the back of my vehicle please, while I phone for a tow truck.
Ah got all your documents but computer still says no?: Hmm still sit in back of car sir while I phone up for a towtruck. That'll be £160 plus £12/day storage. yes Visa that'll do nicely sir.

Slight thread hijack - I trust you wont be going back there ever again ! My Local MOT man does a 5 minute pre-check of bulbs, tyres and other obvious stuff and changes any blown/faulty bulbs before he starts.

I'm sure they do it to make life awkward.

I got rear ended by some absolute tit a few months ago. He drove off.

I went to the Police Station, filled in a form, and as I was leaving, the officer stopped me and gave ME a producer!!!!yikes

I had to spend half the next Saturday queueing up in the cop shop with the junkies and the alcoholics, breathing in cannabis and vomit.

Absolute ball ache. I'm sure he did it because I had a Porsche.

No, it's standard RTC procedure to check everyone's documents. Pain in the @rse when it's not your fault, but there you go-

When my car was front-ended by a Fail To Stop merchant I went in and was surprised to be asked for my documents. Cue 7 days of frantic licence searching!

Fair do's then. I wonder how many people get caught out by that one?!

Worth pointing out (although I suspect FiF knows) that there is no legal requirement to carry your documents with you.

It is technically an offence, but the Road Traffic Act then says something along the lines of "the section that says it's an offence does not apply if the driver produces the documents within 7 days at a police station he chose at the time".

Because the various databases are often wrong.

That's something which intrigues me. We hear these shock statistics about how large percentages of databases that DVLA, police etc use are wrong. That, coupled with large-scale ANPR checks on roads like motorways, should surely cause people to come on here regularly and complain (justifiably!) that they're wrongly in trouble for a related offence. So why isn't it happening much? Is the data really that bad?

And if it is that bad, what are the causes? If it's crap-in-crap-out then drivers are filling out forms wrongly and/or data entrants are screwing up. But maybe there are problems moving data between databases, which ought not to happen in the first place, and should be easy to fix.

I'm sure (if the data is bad) that it's the result of incompetence on the behalf of the authorities; I'm just curious as to how exactly.
