I see that banning aslcohol consumption in public is being bandied around, amongst other illiberal suggestions. Cant see how that is going to prevent the chavs who get drunk inside before going out to cause trouble, but logic isnt a big point amongst politicians.

The question is why the plod dont use the powers they already have to clamp down on disorderly drunks in town centres?

'bandied about' is the right word.
I have no idea how this is going to help the situation.
Sounds like a soundbite without much substance to me.
There are already areas in some cities where it is an offence to consume alcohol in public.

They do.
They arrest people for drunk & dis outside, but banning the consumption outside means you can act on those likely to cause problems before they get drunk outside or before they get disorderly.

It's also an offence to be drunk inside licensed premises & to serve someone who is drunk.

So, if the police are already arresting people for drunk and dis, why is there such a big problem in some town centres? What is going wrong?

Not enough officers to arrest them all. You've got to chose wisely because storage space is limited & you will be tied up for a long time with the one you arrest.
Twenty years ago I could arrest one, fill in a quick proforma, then go & get another. Stack them 20 to a cell as well if necessary. Not any more though.

Friday and Saturday nights are such a staffing issue where I work that the powers that be are trying to change the entire force's shift pattern to cover it.

It's not uncommon to fill the local custody centre on Saturday nights and have to start taking new prisoners 20 miles to the next nearest.

I don't think I need to ask which you prefer. I can't see a downside to putting a load of drunken chavs in a cage together, to be honest. Last chav standing gets, um, shot?

Hang on the mask is begining to slip! Before you know know it VH and DVD will be slipping on the camel hair coats and leather driving gloves and coming over all Gene Hunt. The calm, reasoned, logical arguments of the professional 21st century Policeman will disappear, the attempts to make us muppets understand the law will be binned and it will turn into " Right you slag, not only am I doing you for a ton plus up the great North road, but I bet you've fingers in more pies than an leper in a pork farms factory" and a quick bit of roadside justice will ensue. wink

Trouble was that 20 years ago they were all black and the riots that resulted were no fun for anyone. I remember St Pauls.

Personally, while this has its disadvantages I can see bringing this situation back for drunk and disorderly being far more effective than the ideas about banning alcohol in public spaces, and also having far less effect on the innocent law-abiding citizen.

Would you get as many people staggering out of clubs, puking and pissing in doorways, or chavs wandering around with a bottle of cider looking for people or property to abuse, if they knew getting caught might mean getting bunged in a cell with Brawling Jimmy, picked up earlier in the evening pissed off his head and spoiling for a fight?

Fear of consequences may not be the nicest way of making people adopt some responsibility - but it's a way nevertheless.

Clearly all the drunks and drunken youths have bought their beer somewhere. Could one of the policemen tell us whether they do much to nick the publicans who serve people who are drunk or the shopkeepers who sell to the underage? (I ask because I don't know the answer, not to be provocative.) Having been out and about late on a Friday night and having been drunk in pubs several times, it seems to me that these laws are just ignored by the drinks trade.

Don't you think some of it is to do with the type of drinks being drunk?

I would argue that shots and alcopops have a sort of delayed effect which beer, by virtue of the sheer volume involved, does not. To clarify what I mean, someone could appear more or less OK(ish) yet have a number of units sitting in the gut waiting to be absorbed into the blood stream. They are going to be gibbering rag dolls regardless of whether they consume any more or not.

Wouldn't shots get you p!ssed quicker?More concentrated alcohol? I don't know just asking....Why don't councils/plod do more to expose those selling to underage drinkers?
