How about, instead of just pouring their drink away and moving them on, police take them into custody as being children at risk and call their parents in for a talking to and to take their offspring home?

Can't contact them, they're out drinking somewhere, the kids don't know where.

Since when did they pour their drink away? They confiscate it, and donate it to charitable causes when it piles up.

Seems a perfectly reasonable solution.

That's fine. They can stay in custody until their parents are back home then.

No space for them & you'd just effectively become child minders dealing with nothing else.

What coppers should do is pull out the REAL alcohol (like whiskeys) and then show the hoodies/yobs/chavs who is the "man". None of this White Lightning crap.

1st time take their booze and tell them to go home, and inform the parents whats happened.
2nd time put them in a strict bording school and re-align them with society, and take what money can be taken from the parents to pay for it.

So pass them on to social services. The point is that unless you do actually take action that they would rather not be on the receiving end of you will get nowhere.

And social services don't come for hours & hours, so all your Police officers are sat in the station looking after them instead. Not the best use of our Police services.

If you want child catchers get them, it's not what I want our Police tied up with.

So get things changed such that social services are required to attend in less than 1 hour or something.

The point is that if you're not prepared to take action such that they are unlikely to want to go through it again then you can hardly complain that the problem doesn't go away. If all you do spill their drink and move them on then they are hardly likely to see any deterrent are they?

perhaps they should bring back a form of national service - all these asbo types have to join up for a minimum of two years (for 16 year old or over), and for the younger ones still working on that one! I do feel that a lot of responsibility rests with the parents who should be held to account, and a suitable penalty applied to the parents of persistent children.

But a lot of the parents dont care. They think this is just "kids being kids". And "well their teachers should teach them better". Basically they think the state should keep their kids in check. So fine I think we should. As I said above, if they are a repeat offender take the kids away from the parents and have the state bring them up properly, and charge the parents for it/cut their benifits.

Contary to popular belief, the military have standards and, quite simply, wouldn't want/accept these yobs.

Then again, with military disipline, these gobshites wouldn't last 5 minutes before begging to leave. And of course we cannot keep them couped up - human rights you see. They cry, we keel over and provide to their every need.

Think "Bad lads army" - how many people were "changed men" and some even wanted to join the forces. No bugger from that show ever made it into the army and most reverted back to their ways after a while.

Although, on the flipside, nothing is more effective then sticking a Martini-henry in Mr Chav-turned-Army-Private's hands and saying "now, ma boy, the zulu's are over the next ridge.. fix swords and give 'em hell laddy!"

/edited to add:

I don't care how "changed" these wits may be from some national service.. would YOU want to train them to kill and hand them an automatic rifle?

Agreed! But something needs to be done! The social asbo underclass seems to be ruling the quiet suburbs nowadays - if you try and stand up for what is righg you will probably get a good kickign or worse. If you don't and they come off worse you will be in the poop!

For the want of sounding old (32) I do blame the parents for this. Perhaps they should be neutered?

How on earth can the Police get social services to come out to a super-low grade call in less than an hour? They are an extremely busy service stacked with lots of serious cases.
I don't know how the mechanics of it would work but I don't agree that it is a super-low grade case.

It isn't for no reason. If they're drinking and they're under age then they are clearly not capable of being at liberty unsupervised. As the OP said, they should be treated as "children at risk". They are in custody for their own safety. smile

FishFace said:
I agree it's a problem and it's not ideal to just pour it away and leave, but when put into context it's the only way it can be dealt with.
I don't agree. If their parents are irresponsible to the point that their children don't know where they are and are out, under-age drinking in public then it's time to get social services involved. If the parents are not capable of being responsible for their children then perhaps they shouldn't have them?

To be honest I really don't care what happens to the parents of these children so long as the children are a) removed from the street drinking under-age and b) if necessary subsequently removed from the environment that thinks it is acceptable for that to happen.

If you'd ever seen the sort of circumstances that can exist & children not get taken into care by social services, you'd realise how totally bereft of reality what you are suggesting is.

I think you've missed the point. The system doesn't work were all agreed. So whats being suggested is a system that does. A system that actually removes kids from environments that are not good for them. A system where the Police could actually expect support from "social services" (even if that does sound like street prostitution). The SS would turn up and remove the kids from the parents and place them in a healthy environment, when prompted by the police.
