Where to find out if a vehicle has an MOT?
Discussion
At work i've got into a discussion about the vehicles that we have.
Some of them have been submitted for their MOT's however some have not and no-one who works here can remember exactly when we got the vehicles. (They are all 04 plate).
Is there anywhere online I can quickly check if they have an MOT? Theres no documentation for them at our place. I suppose I can ring head office but its a long winded process.
Also as I understood it if your caught driving without an MOT its the drivers fault not the comapnies, a superior at work said its the companies responsibility to have an MOT so if caught I can pass the blame on, (I refused to drive one of the vans hence this discussion starting).
Can anyone clear this up?
Thanks

The VOSA site can confirm MOT details but only if you have the certificate number.
You could try to do a dry run taxing the cars on the DVLA on-line system. The system will search database for MOT & Insurance. If it declines you the opportunity to tax the vehicle then it may point to the fact it is not MOT'd.

The offence under section 47 (MOT) RTA 1988 is committed by ANY PERSON who:
uses,(driver and firm if on firms business)or
permits,or
causes
a vehicle to be on a road without a current MOT.
So the company will also be hammered. There is no exemption clause, like Insurance, for an employee to claim that he did not know no Ins inforce. Obviously there will be mitigation for him.
Max fine £2,500 if vehicles adparted to carry more than 8, otherwise £1,000. No points/disq under that Act.

You only need the reference number from the vehicle's registration certificate.
Yes, but I bet the reg certificate is at head office, not at the local depot where the OP works. You only need the reference number from the vehicle's registration certificate.
If it was me I would ask head office for a spread sheet showing the status ( last done & next due ) for MOT and service for each vehical based at your depot. Also, ask them to give a copy of each vehicals MOT certificate to keep in the glove box.
One other thing, they cannot buy tax without the MOT ( if required ). You know roughly when the vehicals were first used, and the tax will last for exactly one year. Therefore, if they are on their third tax disc, you should be OK. If on their fourth tax disc, there probably should have an MOT certificate.
I know that dealing with ones own company can sometimes be a bigger head ache than clients & suppliers!

I mean I look at it like driving my own car and if you dont have an MOT you dont have insurance so two accounts of law breaking.
Thanks for the other info as well gents
Where's Van when he's needed --- being pedantic, but think that you could refuse to drive firm's vehicle until Mot and insurance confirmed ---most firms put in that position either get shirty or produce the goods - problem is that then you're classed as a trouble maker.
I had to collect a replacement lease vehicle other day - at my request all data was produced - MOT/service date /type of service etc - but then they know if some of us refuse to drive it's major problems.

Yeah I agree you are branded a trouble maker, the problem this has all stemmed from is that the two routes we use daily there have been a few ANPR vans located on them. I won't name my employer but they are part of the worlds biggest retailer and they of all people should be able to run this properly. Its someones incompetance that vehicles are missing MOT's and I just want to make sure its them who carry the can.
I dont see getting stopped without an MOT any different than a bald tyre i.e. its the drivers responsibility. However work are saying its fine just to keep customers happy.

The bigger employers are sometimes the least organised / think they can get away with it.
Its up to the driver to be sure the vehical is road worthy. This includes lights, tyres etc, and the MOT ( if applicable ).
Its your choice whether you want to be branded as a trouble maker, or be in trouble with the police after driving past an ANPR.
I know its easier to type this than to make a desicion when thinking about how you pay next months mortgage without a job. Come to think of it, drive past too many ANPR without the MOT, and you won't have a job anyway.
At the end of the day, if the vehical is MOT'd, then other than the "hassle" your employer should not object to confirming this, or confirming the date it was first registered if less than 3 years old.
If they cannot confirm, you really do have to ask whether or not you should be working for them. Its not asking a lot to get a set of dates written down at head office and sent over and / or a set of photocopied bits of paper....
