Bloody kids again. They've taped up the 9 to make it look like 8, front and rear. Obviously I have removed it no, but I have no idea how long it was like that. If for some reason the bibs had noticed, how much sh1t would I have been in?

No, no, no.

Remove the tape, not the number plate.

Otherwise, as Confucius predicts, 'mucho shitto falls from high place on confused man........'

I always thought that putting tape on the reg plate will not effect any detector, as they look at the reflective properties and not the actual image of the plate?

Exactly right Mad Dave. If the offence (I assume that this was an offence) had been spotted, what would be the likely/maximum punishment was what I wanted to know. They might do it again!

I don't get what all this stuff is about either . . .

I seem to remember David Beckham putting black tape on his Jaguar to make it look like a different letter.
It was in the Sun newspaper with photo a while back, so it must be true.

Obviously he is setting a good example role model etc

To deliberately alter a number plate with the intention of evading capture for something or to avoid the identification of your vehicle is a CRIMINAL OFFENCE, not a traffic offence. i.e. You will go to court and if convicted, have a criminal record.
It's not a petty FPN offence.
All the above only applies if the officer who stops you can be bothered to deal with it in that way, as it take alot longer for him as well as you.
