In the Sept 6th issue of Classic Car Weekly pg3 is a story stating that the rules or guidelines around speed cameras are to be changed to allow, at the discretion of the authorities, that they be blended into the their background. That is, that the compulsory yellow case colouring be in future left up to those locally siting them.
Is this true? Surely this is a step too far, it's got to be entrapment?

It has already happened!
Hypothecation, the rules allowing 'cost recovery' from enforcement sites, ended April 07. The SCPs are no longer governed by those rules; they are now simply a recommendation.

Will they still be able to call them Safety Cameras, if they are camoflaged?

It just proves they are about punishment and not safety.

If they would want to be seen as not a cash collection machine, then surely the easiest way to do that would be to remove the financial part of the penalty? If it was all about safety, why does it need to make money as the points themselves would be enough of a penalty.

It is like charging a murderer with jail, and oh yes, a £100 fine ...

Good point!
clap

But as I've always said...safety camera or cash cow...call them what you will, they still only collect revenue from those who break the law and exceed the posted speed limits within the area they police.

But, what if the speed limit is set artificially low (to catch more people breaking the limit?) and thus is actually increasing the danger? While exceeding the limit is breaking the law, in such a case, to quote Charles Dickens, ‘the law is an ass’.

Would it be a problem if concerned citizens took it upon themselves to paint them a high-vis yellow, for safety's sake?

But then we'd all have to pay the running costs for the SCPs.
No thanks, leave it to those who are caught speeding.

My point in starting the thread was that, at least to me, it seemed fair if they were made clearly visible. Police cars are painted so you can't miss them, the line down the middle of the road is white not black, roads signs have a coloured background etc. This is a step further and moves too far for my tastes.

Before SCPs came along they didn't have to be painted yellow & Police can/have always used some unmarked cars for speed enforcement.

Guess it depends on if you think pro-active deterrence is better than waiting for someone to commit a crime.

Simply close all SCP's and leave policing to the police.. Problem solved.

But then nobody will be dealing speeders & I know some here will think that a good thing, but there are plenty of others (me included) think that will be a bad thing.

Yep I agree
This is why politicians are quietly sitting on the fence. Knowing how much the subject is like Marmite.
