Question's in the title really, when there's a give way sign on an entrance to a roundabout, who am I supposed to give way to? Presumably I still give way to people on the roundabout, should I be giving way to people on the entrance to the left too?

As I've been tought, and I'm sure its not changed, on a roundabout, you give way to the right (side of approaching traffic only)

Not usually, but if they turn right and head towards your junction it may be a good idea.... smile

Plan to stop, look to go. It won't change due to the presence of a give way sign.

make sure you remember the give way rule on mini roundabouts, although you have priority over the junction to your left, and must give way to the junction on your right you must also GIVE WAY TO ONCOMING VEHICLES TURNING RIGHT (opposite to normal junctions where vehicles turning across the others path should give way)

A learner drive almost learnt that the hard way the other day as im going over a miniroundabout at 35 (40 speed limit) and he just pulls out from the left and i see the instructor dive to the wheel.

I think he learnt a valuble lesson!

I had plenty of stopping distance btw.

I always just look right on a 3 juntion roundabout with straight road going over.

You should go round mini-roundabouts, not over them [covered in a thread some months ago] - Streaky

censoredollocks Why do you think they are flat? They are there to give a junction the rules of a roundabout. ie. give way to the right. Some vans, trucks artics etc would not be able to take the turn without driving on them. If you had to drive round them it would be curbed. smile

164: Mini-roundabouts. Approach these in the same way as normal roundabouts. All vehicles MUST pass round the central markings except large vehicles which are physically incapable of doing so. Remember, there is less space to manoeuvre and less time to signal. Beware of vehicles making U-turns.

A roundabout is just a round bit of one way road. Treat the junctions on it as you would any other normal junction.

Important misunderstanding that's coming up in this thread -- the law on minis is not that you give way to the right, but that you do not enter the roundabout so as to endanger any road user on the roundabout.

In other words you give way to anyone on the RAB already. You will usually find these people to your right, but not always.

The giveway reinforces this with a requirement not to cause another vehicle to brake or change direction to avoid a collision, and is useful if the roundabout sign is upsidedown - which in many cases it is.

I take most mini's ar 30-40 big roundabout it depends where im comming off but i manager 40-50 most of the time depending on size, i start off about 25-30 entering the roundabout (open view roundabouts that is)

Have you noticed the ambiguity in the phrase "select the appropriate lane"? What lane should you be in to go straight across when on a dual carriageway roundabout?

Apparently not. The correct method, and I had to get someone at the DSA to confirm this, is to move into the left hand lane on approaching. I enquired about this because a bloody German tourist nailed me as we went across and, although he was wrong for trying to exit right from the left hand lane (without indicating) I was also wrong for being in the right hand lane going straight ahead

On one memorable occasion, my Gurkha driver went straight over a roundabout in an air-lightweight Landrover. It was my first experience of Gurkha's and I hadn't realised how literally they took orders. Ouch! - Streaky

So how does the give way sign make one entrance any different to all the others?
