im looking at joining the dark side at the moment...I phoned up the careers line & the woman was a little unhelpful.

Whats the training, how long, where its held & how hard is the physical stuff?
I left the forces in 2005 so am fairly fit & strong, what level of fitness should I be looking at before going through with it?
Also what not to say in the interview?!

I wouldn't worry.

Even a fat wheezy boy with a letter from matron could pass the physical these days. smile

Everybody is on probation for the first two years.

That will depend which force you are looking to join, there have been a lot of changes recently in my force area.

So are all the forces still looking for new recruits? When I was looking a few years back I was told that there were not recruiting at the moment - yet all I seem to hear is that there are not enough officers being recruited confused

They tend to fill up for a while and put recruiting on hold whilst the successful candidates are processed and then once the backlog is cleared they start up again. Budgets & funding also play a role.

No, there not looking in my area at the moment unfortunatly- but not in a rush.
Do they try & place you with where you live (within reason) or do you just get told where you will be posted too, like in the forces?

Sorry for all the questions- is there somewhere I can look all this stuff up?

I don't like being referred to as a "boy". And the matrons are called "Sisters" these days...

They do try to accommodate you but it will be down to operational need. If you decide to go for it don't hang around too long, it took me just over a year from applying to starting training.

You'll get posted within a reasonable distance, although you do hear a few horror stories.

The recruitment process for my force is:

Application form

Assessment Centre - a day where you have to be interviewed, take the written tests and carry out the role plays etc

Background checks - previous employment history, family history etc

Medical

Fitness test

If you get through all that then you're in.

You do 18 weeks training in a class room and then move onto a 9 week tutored period which is working with a tutor constable. Then, if you get signed off from that you get allocated to a shift and spend your 2 years probation going through the 'National Occupational Standards'. After that, you're done and away. The 2 year probation period is normally spent on a response shift, working as you would expect.

This may vary from force to force, I'd suggest having a look at the website for the force you fancy joining and read up on what they expect from you and what you can expect from them if you apply.

It took me 2 years to get in and I applied when I was 24.

Get you!

Do you have the 'always there' scheme?

I don't think so. All we get is a letter from the Divisional Commander saying "thanks for not being sick". (If only they knew...)

It's just got to the point of sheer bloody-mindedness with me now. I don't get any benefit from it, just personal pride.

Good for you, there were far too many people who didn't have the same attitude unfortunately on one my old shifts.
