How long does it take for the envelope to hit the mat if you've gone 'slightly' over the limit and been nicked?

If you're talking about a camera or mobile laser, i.e. not actually been stopped by old bill, just flashed, then if you are the registered keeper you should receive an NIP within 14 days asking you to furnish the details of the driver at the time.
If you were not the registered keeper then you can wait ages to find out your fate, depending on who the r/k is and whether they fill the form in and send it back

The police or Scamera processing unit must post it to the registerred keeper within 14 days of the offence. So allow a couple of days for postage and you are in the clear. Crack the champers on day 17 if you've been lucky.

Thank God for that. Its been 20 days now. The problem was that this weeks local rag had the front cover plastered with people being caught out at some hideous speeds on the new Bypass.

You know how it is, quiet new road, quick car etc....

Cheers!

I got snapped whilst driving my girlfriends car and since she gave my details and I've now recieved the NIP it's nearer 20 days. How much time has to go by before you can get away without paying if you're not the RK?

Can someone tell me what the basis in law is for the police not being able to prosecute after 14 days from the committing a speeding offence?

Its to do with the regulations on service of Notice of intended prosecution. The rule is that if it is not sent within 14 days after the date of the offence (15 days in all), it is not valid and therefore no prosecution can be proceeded with.

NIP can be served in a manner of ways.
verbally,
by post,
last known address by hand,
left with someone at current address by hand.
