Is it illegal for a car dealer to sell a used car that has been decatted, that is, one that was manufactured with one and subsequently decatted?

Providing the car is capable of going through an mot without one i wouldnt think so.

A cat is not a legal requirement

There is not test for it's presence during an MOT test, just the emissions test.

Without a Cat The Majority of cars would fail the emissions test.

Only if you don't adjust them properly to run without the cat.

So its possible to have a de-catted car adjusted so its runs without the cat yet still meets the requirements to pass the MOT emissions test? scratchchin

Sure - the cat does nothing for the CO / CO2 emissions

I dont think you stand a chance of getting a decatted car through the MOT on cat standards, after all why bother with cats at all if thats the case? I know the cat drops a couple of percent off the relevent polluting gasses, but wether it be unburnt hydrocarbons, various oxides , or carbon monoxide I dont know.

Maybe no test but i am sure from 92 on (i belive it was 92) all cars must be fitted with cats

That is correct. But I am not aware of any test that actually verifies there is one there

No car *needs* a CAT.

If some how it can pass a test without one, fine.

Here is the diagram for what to test against.

I thought the purpose of Cat was to reduce the Carbon Monoxide outputs and turns them into Carbon Dioxide, hence the reason why you cannot now gas youself to death in a modern car, not just their only reason for being obviously, If a Cars emissions can be reduced to EU legal limits without a Cat then this is Ok, its just not possible...yet.

Yes, NEW cars SOLD.

Nothing about selling a 2nd hand car.
Nothing about owning a car without a cat.
Nothing about needing a cat to pass the MOT.

...in other words, you can buy your nice shiny new car, take it round the corner, replace the cat with a decat pipe, and your car is perfectly legal.

If in 3 years time it then passes an MOT, it is still both legal AND roadworthy!!!
