To sell a car which has the chassis number and engine number etc ground off?

Its a car my friend bought off another friends grandparents who scrapped the car. My friend bought it as a field car so we ground the numbers in case anything happened where it would trace back to the grandparents. Anyway, it's in half decent condition still and he is thinking about selling it on ebay, however I think he could get in trouble over it.

Any advice?

Cheers!

When you say scrapped what do you mean?Is it to be sold to be used on the road?

If its legit then fair enough, but mr MOT man will flag will it, DVLA will jump on you & then you'll be up for a DVLA inspection. Then a q plate.

I think it all depends on precisely what your friends' grandparents did. If they declared the car as scrapped (i.e. that they had personally destroyed it) then it won't have a V5 any longer which will obviously prevent any normal sale as a roadgoing car. If they just stopped using it and effectively abandoned it in a field, you would have to sort out the tax/SORN situation but it could in principle still be road legal.

Not worth it unless your "half decent field car" happens to be a porsche or similar!!

You may also find yourself sitting in a cell waiting to be interviewed & the Police seizing the car whilst they examine & check out it's history.

It hasn't been officially scrapped.

I said that if he sold it without it being scrapped officially and anyone ever found out what the car is the grandparents would be landed with a fine because it hasn't been sorned.

He says that because it has no numbers on it it can't be traced and all he is doing is selling a car as a field car, it is out of his hands what the new owners do with it.

I reckon i'm right wink

But if it's not been oficially scrapped, or sold to someone, then whether it has chassis or engine numbers or not, surely the log book still points to the grandparents. You have to transfer the ownership of the car to someone, not just let it lie. Physically you can do what you like to the actual car...

I don't see anything wrong with selling the car with no numbers...it's just a lump of metal at the end of the day, but it's the proper disposal/transfer of the identity that is the issue.

I don't get it myself...it does not add up.

The grandparents must already be getting greif if it's not been sorned, surely?

Something dodgy going on me thinks...

Depends when it was SORNed doesn't it? Not that long ago there was no need to SORN a car, if you didn't use it there was no tax or SORN.

The problems comes if it was taxed at the date when SORN was intorduced as DVLA know it exists and from that moment on it needs to be either taxed, SORNed or scrapped. But if it wasn't taxed at that time DVLA wouldn;t know about it so can't SORN it.
