Travelling home from le mans last night early in the morning, i passed a police astra in the MG about 75 on a section of dual carriageway as it pulled off on to a driveway at the side of the road. At the roundabout at the top i flew left down the slip road and continued along my way at about 80mph - noticing the lights coming on to the road from the roundabout when i was about quarter of a mile away.

The lights caught me up but i continued zooming along, until i noticed a reflective flash on the bonnet of the car - "hmmm, bet thats that copper" thought i, so i momentarily slowed, but then the car behind slowed right down and instead of being behind me, appeared to slow to a stop, as i carried on. "Bu99er it" i thought "i wanna get home" so seeing him do this i pulled away. Shot round some bends and then a set of S bends at about 80-85mph and up the hill the otherside, at the top the lights reappear and a rather asthmatic police astra catches me up with the blues on... Bollox.

I didn't pull over immediately because the road was quite twisty with double whites and i didnt want to cause a problem so found a gateway. Stopped engine, radio etc, put hazards on, and waited for the ticket.

"Hello sir"

"Hello"

"is this your car?" blah blah

"any idea why we were following you?"

"er i probably had my toe down"

"Right, do you know what the speed limit is?"

"yes its 60mph"

"Right you went through the grindley brook esses like you were at brands hatch. More than 80mph!"

"Yes..."

"Did you not think this was excessive?"

"well it is 230am...."

Cue a mini lecture on it jsut starting to rain (only when i was stopped, not when i was driving) and therefore following the dry spell the roads could become greasy etc.

Got a clip round the earhole and told to get on my way and make it home in one piece.

I wasn't told i was getting booked, so providing i haven't been duped and a nasty surpirse awaits me in tomorrows post, it appears i got away quite lightly...

The quotes are as close to what was said at the time as i can remember, i wasn't cheeky i don't think, but matter of fact about the time of day etc - if pushed i suppose i could have mentioned i run uprated suspension and brake parts etc so i thought the car was capable enough, but i kept my trap shut and listened.

To me, that was an effective deterent. I did slow after that for the majority of the way home. The policeman was not arsy in any way, merely authoritive and to the point. He agreed that it was late and so there was no traffic. I did not drive erratically AFAIK and he did not comment on any dodgy driving on my behalf - i didn't even break the white lines through the bends, so i guess you could say he used his judgement.

If that was a fixed camera site, i would of course have three points on my licence by now regardless of all these points i make in my defence...

So thanks Mr "another very nice policeman" and i hope i meet you again the next time i have my toe down!

Thought i'd post to save some of the slagging off the police chaps get on this board.... Hope i haven't tempted fate to give me that ticket though...

Another fishing expedition I think by Mr Plod.
Let me explain.........
We see a car late at night, doing 80-85 MPH.
I don't get out of bed to write about those speeds, however.
You were stopped for several things to be ascertained.
You have technically committed a moving traffic offence, so you can be breath tested. (most coppers can smell alcohol and the tell tale signs of drink/drive. i.e chewing gum or the old favorite of lighting up at the first opportunity, so a proper breath test is not always necessary)
You may be Mr slag from slagsville and turning your car over could be fruitful, if the grounds for a search are attained.
Both of these can apply even if you're driving a nice car.
I suspect that Mr Plod never had any intention of stuffing you for speed, but stopping you because you WERE speeding is a good way of fishing for more serious stuff and then giving you a bit of friendly advice. Result, two people leave happy.
If you'd been pissed or carring a boot full of stolen photocopier parts then I guess you wouldn't be posting here and I wouldn't be writing this inane shit when really I should be in bed.

I was stopped at 11:30pm in a residential area. (Coming back form a Rospa meeting) Rozzer politely said he was checking my vehicle.

He asked me a question, I guessed in order to get me to breath out and to check for fear that would surely be present if I had anything to hide. (I didn't: Apart from a a strong liking for schoolgirls...)

I was well impressed. He was present in a residential area, he'd checked for drink driving and potential crime. And it was 30 limit so *if* he'd seen someone at high speed he'd have got a 'fair' speeding nick.

He wasted a minimum of my time.

This is what the people want from Rozzers. I was so impressed I nearly wrote a letter of thanks to the Chief Rozzer.

Compare that to the effect 9 points in the post for a single offence has had on my attitude.

Yay. Another reason for coppers yes, cameras no.....

You nick a car and blast by a camera at 100mph, the poor bugger who owns it will get the ticket.....

:/

I've been stopped at 75-80mph a couple of christmas ago (in a ZX) at 3am on an empty M/Way. The police didn't care about my speed. They wanted to ensure I wasn't drinking. I wasn't, and the apologised for occupying 5 minutes of my time....

....I was happy to be stopped. I'd rather get stopped once a month than have 1 more idiot drink 15 pints and think he can drive.....

Not true. The guy who owns it may get a nip, but he can obviously prove the car was stolen, if he had reported it, so the nip will be withdrawn.

Utter sh1te. How can you prove a car is stolen.

I've just been through the process of fighting NIPs. It is for you to prove your innocence, not for them to prove your guilt.

If someone clones your plate, and you can't prove where you or your car was on the day time in question I simply can't see a way out.

Which makes sense, otherwise everyone would simply say their plate was cloned.

I heard a case of this once, the only way it was proved, was the innocent party had a sticker or other identifying mark on their car, which was not on the car with the forged plates. I can't exactly remember what it was, but it must have been something permanent (dealer sticker, fog lamp or something) because otherwise anyone could go through a camera and slap a sticker on the car saying it wasn't them and that this identifies this. Whatever, i do recall the innocent party having to fight for months until it was agreed it wasn't them.
