Driving down the bypass yesterday, and to my amazment there was a cyclist on the bypass? Is this right? So I called 999, for that guys own safety as I thought if he gets hit at 80 odd, it's bye bye.

As long as it's not a motorway, he's entitled to be there. Cyclists are allowed on DCs.

Doesn't mean it's necessarily safe for them, esp as most cyclists I've seen don't bother with any hi-viz. 15mph cyclist vs 56mph truck or 80mph repmobile...no thanks!

Cyclists are allowed on DCs. I've ridden on DCs before. It's not pleasant and I didn't do it many times before I gave it up as a bad job. I hated those trucks passing inches from my handlebars. It's not their fault -- DCs generally don't have space for cyclists and traffic volume is too high for trucks to get into the outside lane so they just squeeze by.

But of course no cyclist would be hit at 80-odd because the speed limit's 70. And if many cyclists start using DCs then the limits will be reduced "to make the roads safer for all users".

True, but that wasn't the question.

Does that old guy still commute year in year out daylight and darkness using a tricycle in Staffs on the A5 (Muckley Corner to Wall Island) and then southern end of the A38 up to near Fradley?

The fact that he survived says a lot more about driver awareness than cyclingplus warriors would ever give credit for.

Slightly off topic (and also in a bygone age) but a previous work colleague who was a racing cyclist in his youth once told of how he and a friend were out on a tandem on a DC. A plod car pulled up alongside, passenger window went down and were told they were in excess of 70mph so "slow down and stopp picensoredng about ".

Got to be honest - I find it hard to believe they topped 70mph...but you can easily get up to a fair lick. No speed limit for a pushbike either wink

He did say it was a racing tandem and that they were both going for it. I would doubt if it was sustained for that long though.

But has gor me thinking. Could you trigger a Gatso on a bike. On a downhill (which is where they are inevitably sited) in a 30mph limit, should be able to get to 40mph on a bike.

The Edinburgh Bypass (A720) has signs that specifically exclude bicycles.

Not a chance they hit 70mph ... unless it was done a BIG hill!

It's pretty easy to trigger those flashing "30 SLOW DOWN" signs on the flat so I'd say "yes". Sadly, only gatso on my commute is on an uphill......
