What's the law regarding American cars that have not got front number plates driving in the UK? I ask because I regularly see American cars near the US army bases without front plates and was wondering if they are driving illegaly.

Funky,
you'll find that they're american registered therefore British law has no application as to their conditions of use on GB roads (apart of course roadworthiness) the same applies e.g. to an eytie who has got mini front plates, or anyone with a car registered outside GB...... see also the arab registered ones, how is a scamera going to read arabic scrpt???

Total solution? Get an accommodation address in Southern Ireland. Buy and insure a right-hand drive car there. Tax it there and use it in the U.K. If you have an address in both countries, or preferably a company registered in S. Ireland which actually buys the car, this is perfectly legal under European and U.K. law, so long as the vehicle leaves the U.K. at least once every six months (it doesn't necessarily have to go back to Ireland). With an address in S. Ireland you could also take a test there and having passed it send your UK licence back to the DVLA. Most U.K. insurers have a Dublin office and will accept U.K. no claims bonuses. My broker is even offering to arrange the Irish cover note and certificate for my company car. Scameras can read S.Irish plates, but the info is useless to them. I have a friend who lives in Wales most of the time, Dublin for some of the time and he has an Irish licence. He got stopped for doing 92 mph on the M4 and was told to slow down, please, Sir, when you are in this country. He doesn't deliberately speed past cameras, but if he does get caught out it is not a big problem for him. In Ireland he would present his UK licence! Sort of 'Game, Set & Match'. Thus never any NIP's for him.
