Regulatory signs - placement
Discussion
I have been a long time reader of Pistonheads but never have used the forum before, so here goes....
I received a Penalty Charge Notice from Tower Hamlets for failing to obey a no-left turn regulatory sign. The photo was taken by a Smart car with a camera on the roof, therefore there is no contest it was me turning left.
The issue I have is with the signage at the junction. It is a crossroad, a minor road (the one I was on) onto a major road. The sign indicating that a left turn is prohibited is situated on the far side of the major road from where I turned. There is a sign painted on the road before the turn on the road I was on that only has a straight-ahed and right arrow but this is very worn and is actually parked on. There is no no-left turn sign before the junction.
I wrote to the council explaining that a regulatory sign needs to be in front of the obstacle/junction. 99% of those I have seen since are situated like this. The council did their normal procedure of pay £50-00 now or £150-00 if you contest.
Can somebody help with the regulations on the citing of regulatory signs?
What made me smile was the fact that a sign has now been added to the junction!

There should be two signs before the junction to make it legally enforceable, have a look at the link it gives you all the lay outs for even type of road marking and sign, if the ones at the junction you were done at do not comply then they are not legal, It will take some reading to find the right marking.

No sign on approach isn't legal and how can it be obeyed if it is placed after a turn has been made?
Traffic Signs and General Directions 2002 stipulate that a prohibition has to be signed with an approved sign but it does not go into fine details. That is contained in LA Bible -Traffic Signs Manual which should be adhered to.
Hope you have photo's/evidence of missing sign to prove it wasn't there at the time.
This is one of those incidents that one should consider taking it all the way in an appeal to the adjudicator.

This is a case where council bureaucracy will work in your favour. There will be records of work to show when the sign was installed or replaced and this should be publicly available if things go that far.A
