Not displaying tax?
Discussion
Right, my tax disc ran out at midnight last night. Obviously I was going to go the post Office on saturday and queue with all the other idiots who've left it till the last minute to sort their RFL out (and i'm sure there are plenty of us!).. but I moved house last weekend and can't find my insurance cert or mot sheet
. no bother then, i'll just have to order it online. thing is of course that it'll take a few days to arrive so i'll be committing te offence of not displaying my tax disc.. bugger.
To make matter worse, the car is registered at my parents house because i've only just moved and not sorted out the address details yet and it's going to get posted to their house which is 40 miles away and over the severn bridge.... and they're on holiday! So i can't even find out when it'll be delivered so that i can pick it up.
Any idea how likely i am to get raped by the dvla/police for my stupidity?

hi dont worry i have driven around for nearly a month before when forgetting to renew(paid up as soon as i realised). didnt even get a fine from DVLA.
your only problem is if a policeman sees you. he can do you for not displaying but im sure all they do is report you to DVLA and then DVLA take action. and if they know you have paid i doubt they will do anything. do you get email confirmation maybe try carrying this around.

no, seriously if the computer says yes then you should be OK, providing you're not pulled over.......
Worth bearing mind that you can be prosecuted for failing to display a valid tax disc, despite the fact that your vehicle may be currently taxed.Vehicle Excise and Registration Act 1994 said:
33 Not exhibiting licence
(1) A person is guilty of an offence if—
(a) he uses, or keeps, on a public road a vehicle in respect of which vehicle excise duty is chargeable, and
(b) there is not fixed to and exhibited on the vehicle in the manner prescribed by regulations made by the Secretary of State a licence for, or in respect of, the vehicle which is for the time being in force.

The advice to Plod from HO in this case is "Verbal Warning Only' according to my sheet - Fixed penalty - Home Office Offence Group 810 - Vehicle registration and excise offences.
I repeat again, the offence of using without an Excise Licence is only a REVENUE offence that only DVLA can authorise for prosecution. If stopped Plod has to submit Cle 2/6 form to DVLA. In this case by the time that form gets to DVLA Licence taken out so they check their records, voila Licence in force. As above done on line so records should show one in force.
Good sense though to get vehicle documentation into some sort of checkable file system so one is not caught caught for a hassle free life.

Going to get road tax is a hassle, the post office is only open for a short while on the weekend so you have to go during the weekdays. This isn't a problem but I don't want to wait for 30 minutes in a queue when I've got things to be doing.
So yeah I will use the online from now on, now I know it's available. I'm not particularly concerned if the Local Post Office closes because Royal Mail is an inefficient company that has been sheltered with a state monopoly.

You need only worry about non display if you PARK the car on a public road, or anyhwere in London.
A cop will need an eagle eye to stop you, and he can/should check with the DVLA that the computer says yes...in theory he can still do you, but that would be one hell of a petty sod.
Most will use ANPR and not even move from their donuts.
London wardens will not ( or did not ) check with the DVLA and they will clamp and even tow the car for a laugh.
So don't get out of the car, just drive!!

Yep, to be fair the online set-up is reasonable - you can apply 15 days early, so it should arrive well in time.So yeah I will use the online from now on, now I know it's available. Pity they cannot extend the ease of payment when you want to cancel....that's still post and wait a month. Why?????
My motorcycle (which is taxed) has not had a tax disc displayed for the past 2 years as the f**kers kept getting nicked
I keep the tax disc at home in case I do get a 7 day wonder so I can produce it.
Never been stopped yet and hoping that the police officer that stops me will use common sense if they do...

My tax disk is always in my motorbike jacket pocket, therefore I can show it on demand if necessary. However, I haven't had to do so yet in the four years that I've been riding.
