Daily Mail reports on illegally parked talivan
Discussion
The Daily Mail today shows a photograph of a West Yorkshire Talivan breaking the law, parked with all four wheels on the pavement. Pedestrians in front appear to be crossing the road in order to pass by. The road is A644 Huddersfield Road, Mirfield, West Yorkshire. There is mention of 7,000 motorists being caught speeding on the stretch of road in ten weeks, although the local camera partnership suggested it was lower than 7,000.
A spokesman says the talivan will be in use until fixed cameras are fitted. He added that a motorist similarly parked would face a charge of obstruction, but any emergency vehicle doing his job does it to the best of his ability and he is there to stop people being killed or injured.
The paper states that when it comes to the positioning of Talivans “there is one law for the police and another law for everyone else.” Nuff said.

I feel that the tide is turning. 4 new scameras have just gone up in Cambridge, no bad thing in the city I guess but, one has been sited behind a tree.
the best thing about it is that it has made an indignant front page of the local paper with quotes from a member of the ABD! saying how much this will irritate drivers.
That's 3 seperate threads showing the media slating the scameras and talivans.

Police and the operators are aware that its not the most popular of jobs to do but feel that there is a need for it to be done.
I dont believe that im speaking out of turn here BUT in my experience, the following is true.
1) As its been said many times before (and by myself),there is no substitute for being stopped by a Trafpol...you might get dealt with severely, not so severely or given words of advice.(But the discretion is there if its applicable to the circumstances).
However, with the Vans......everyone gets dealt with the same...Well thats not strictly true is it??
If you dont register your vehicle then you get let off altogether.
2)On the other hand and as stated in my previous recent thread about the Marked Police car and the Talivan........i simply could not believe it that 3 drivers a minute were exceeding the 40mph limit (past a van that had its threshold set at 56mph), after passing the Marked Trafpol car at the side of the road.
Now this means one of 3 things...either they could not give a Flying Fc*k about the Police (or their own licences).
That they didnt see us (which is extremely worrying).
Or thirdly, that they are not Registered and/or Insured.
I might test this third point in the not too distant future and post the results on here.

If these Vans are doing so much 'business' then surely, according to statistics, there should be an avalanche of accidents and associated serious injuries and deaths all over the place - why don't our roads appear like war zones........or are the statistics just wrong
Very true...just goes to prove something I've said for a long time; speeding is statistically one of the safest things you can do!

Is this kind of media coverage constructive though.
You have the media spewing shite on one side, and the Scamera parnerships spewing shite on the other.
Just because you may agree with one colour of shite, doesn't change the fact it is shite.
The Daily Mail sells papers and profits by telling you what you want to hear.
The Scamera Parnerships step up a gear against the media hype and keep scamming.
We keep on paying out....to the media and to the scammers.

There is a fourth possibility. They are driving at a safe speed for the conditions and believe they know where all the cameras are. They are guilty in most cases of two things, naivety and breaking an arbritary speed limit. When the NIPs start landing the naivety will be lost. You forget that on this board we are all clued up and realise what we are up against, for most people the full scamera experience is yet to come to London. This is the start of that. There have been fatals on the A40 in the last couple of years. The most recent was a scooter rider being hit by a couple of tipper lorries whilst going into town, just past the "safety camera" outside B&Q. I'm guessing here but I doubt this was speed related, he was probably filtering in slow moving traffic. There was also one where a BMW M3 driver aquaplaned on the underpass on the way into town where the 50 limit starts. This one was probably speed related, although the road was closed for several hours whilst a blocked drain was cleared, surely an admission of culpability on the part of the people maintaining the road. There was also another one there earlier which I saw the boards for but have no details. However it was very soon after the new road layout, when the inside lane was turned into a filter lane for the Target roundabout turn off, to allow for all the cars which are queueing in that lane now the bus lanes have been put in on the A312. You wouldn't believe the number of people I saw making last minute swerves there from the new filter lane when they realised what happened. It's very possible that this is what caused this accident. Changing a road layout is just about one of the most dangerous things you can do, people just drive it as though it were in it's earlier state.
So would making everyone stick to the limit have stopped any of these, well maybe one, but if the road had been properly maintained so would that.
What makes it all worse still is the fact that plod goes up and down that road at speeds that would get us put in prison. Not that I object to that but a realistic speed limit would go a long way to winning you back some friends.
