Unmarked Police car on M-way
Discussion
Just wondering if anyone can help me clarify (and hopefully relief my worry) from a situation last night.
Travelling home late from work (approx 8.15 pm) on the motorway. I joined the slip road with a Vauxhall Vectra, which I noticed was a V6 (twin exhausts) with additional mirrors on the wing mirrors. It didn't ring any alarm bells unfortunately (I simply thought it had been towing a caravan or such like)
I let the Vectra in front of me on the slip road - for which i received a quick hazard light flash in thanks. Once on the m-way I overtook and as the road was quite clear I accelerated to a certain number of leptons above the statutory limit.
I noticed the Vectra then changed lanes to follow me at a discrete distance. Tired I noticed this but it didn't signal a warning. After a couple of minutes the car accelerated and overtook me flashing the blues and POLICE. I decelerated and the car went off into traffic. Later on I noticed he had pulled over another car (I don't know the reason)
I have searched for the answer to this, but it's not clear. As he didn't pull me over, I assume he could still do the paperwork for a NIP, but it would be unusual/unlikely - as if he wanted he would have pulled me over to give me a verbal NIP.
Any thoughts?

You are safe.
Probably because you let him in earlier he didn't feel the need to be mean.
This was policing in the old days.
I'm sure you were more careful about your speed the rest of the journey.
These days now we have infrared and flashless speed cameras you wouldn't have known about your speeding for two weeks so would have carried on that night several leptons above the limit.
And speed cameras are supposed to enforce safety??

its actually laughable the state of play at the moment.
this whole speed kills bullshit is killing the public faith in the police, from speed camera vans "not being manned by police, but by the SCP" but some have the letters P O L I C and E on their bonnet/doors/etc . . . . .
and whats funnier, the BiB on here, who support it like good little boys dont realise they look like fools in the eyes of the majority of the population for being so petty and enforcing these womble esque laws.
i guess they shall wake up one day though, hope.

- id like to point out non of my posts represent my employer or their partners, I would also like to point out that we do have some decent BiB on here, so dont get all hairy mary on me for pointing out the obvious to the ones who are too smug to see it*

Speed Cameras do not promote safety, they are there to penalise law breaking, the only cameras that do a good job are those at Traffic light junctions [if set correctly] that catch red light jumpers.
The rest are almost invariably in place to penalise.
I think there is a great irony in this situation... when the cameras were first considered they were to be placed at accident blackspots, to catch and penalise those that raised the risk level by there actions, you want know something? I supported that and still do!
In one simple action the cops could improve their position on cameras and the public perception of them, and it is this, put the damned things where there are these blackspots and there only, not 'within 1 or 2 miles of the place but where it matters!

The car was letting you know they were there and knew you were speeding .... and that is it - if you hadn't of eased off then they may have pulled you over .... but you did .... so they didn't. End of story.
If Traffic officers see an offence they don't - in 99.9% of cases - just write a report and let someone send an NIP .... they stop you and deal with it.
I have never when on duty just got an index and done a report - I have always stopped the people I want to deal with. That is the way it is normally done.

dare I suggest that the officers used their discretion and despite being over the limit you were actually being safe and courteous and not driving like a total plank and perhaps the other driver wasn't speeding but was driving like a plank so stopped them.
I do hope that senior officers of the officers don't read this topic and take action..............
btw in answer to you 1st question I reckon you've heard the last of it and have spent more time thinking about the situation than the officers spent thinking about you!!

You had a warning. I've had these warnings too on the odd occasion. You've got a greater chance of having run a camera without realising it in the last couple of weeks than you have of getting an NIP from that unmarked car.
I too have allowed police cars to pass while exceeding the speed limit. They tend just to say thanks.

I hope you have just received a warning as said above.
However, there is a SMALL chance that you will get an NiP
I say that, as I had a similar situation 10 years ago.
If I knew then what I know now, I would have put up a fight as
1. ) The NIP arrived 4 weeks over after the offence.
2. ) In the officers statement enclosed it said I was doing 92 mph. I was doing an indicated 85 mph in a car that I subsequently found out that had a speedo that over read by approx 10%, so I am sure my true speed was about 15mph lower than stated.
He came up behind me ( very fast ) flashed his police lights once, and drove off ( very quickly ). At the time I thought "thats lucky, his gone", then a month later I thought "bugger!!"

Same thing happened to me 10 years ago.Police did not stop me, but stopped another car going faster than me which also overtook the unmarked Police car.
I got a NIP, and then a court summons for 94mph in a 70.
You have a 50/50 chance of not getting a NIP.
