i was heading down the a2 towards folkestone early on monday morning, and making decent progress as i was late for the eutotunnel.

in the distance i saw a marked volvo, so i thought i'd stick about 70 yards behind it at the same speed. thing was, this was about 80-85 speed units. i followed for about 15 miles when it overtook a grey volvo estate sitting in the middle lane doing exactly 70. it had about 4 aeriels on the roof, so i pulled in behind (in the inside lane i might add) and my suspicion was confirmed when someone about to overtake at about 90 was warned not to with the alternating rear lights flashing, no more.

bib types, was this a training exercise of some sort?

Possibly. From your description, it sounds like it may have been a VASCAR course.

4 aerials on the roof - might have been doing a Tracker location / training

so in the situation that Tamor describes (ie following a marked car at a distance) if you pace them for a fair distance at above the posted limit are you liable to be pulled?

I recently followed a marked car down the M40 at quite a bit above the limit from about 500/1000 yards..keeping them "just in/out of sight"...nothing happened but could they actually have clocked me for speeding had they so be inclined?

Yes, your speed can be measured even if you are travelling behind the police vehicle.

Hi smile

Ummm that quote above.....isn't there something about getting pulled for speeding by a Traffic car that says something like...they must have FOLLOWED you for a certain distance ???

Or am I behind the times on this ???

Not unusual smile

All the best Brett smile

Nope, all they have to do is use IIRC Vascar in the same way as they would if you were in front, or so I understand. A traffic officer told me he had caught a motorbike doing 135mph in this way.

Yes absolutely or remember the speedos are calibrated in traffic cars so following at a consistant distance for long enough will get you warned at the very least.

Sounds like the training was for Tpac (tactical pursuit)where the rear car acts as a buffer between public and the stop.
