I was allegedly doing 119mph on the M23 going to Gatwick airport last year, the copper was using a handheld laser gun not sure which model (not that it's important), he was in the hard shoulder and holding it over his open driver door. He then obviously got in his car and pulled me over, I didn't contest anything at the time and went through the usual breath test, showed him my driving licence etc and signed the producer document thing. He then let me go after explaining that I would be hearing from the court within six months, I then went on my holiday feeling obviously depressed as I was convinced I would loose my licence, although hoping with good representation I might get a few months or something.
I already had six points on my licence three of which were due to come off so I thought that I would try and delay things until they did, I contacted motoringlawyers.com after reading about them on the web somewhere and explained my predicament, they said wait until the summons etc comes through and then contact them again, I eventually got the letter a week before xmas and there were a few discrepancies on the statement made by the officer, for instance he said I had no form of identification but then goes on to say I produced my driving licence later on, this made me think that he had obviously rushed through the paperwork maybe thinking that I was going to just hold my hand up in court and take my punishment. The lawyers told me that I was silly for ever producing my licence or even signing the producer document (probably good advice for those of you caught in the future) apparently they stand a good chance of getting you off with the police not being able to positively identify you or something, a long shot but a possibility?
Anyway, after they had looked at everything they said they were confident that I would get a discontinuation, they went as far as to say they would give a 70% chance, they aren't cheap though, if it had gone all the way they said it would cost around £3.5k, I was asked to send £2k and let them run with it, so I did and I got the letters though from the courts advising me of the different days that I should appear, none of which I went to as I didn't have to apparently, and then I got the letter from motoring lawyers saying that they had discontinued AND the magistrate awarded a defendant's cost order which means I will get most of my money back, WHAT A FCUKING RESULT!!!
Sorry for the long post, I’m just buzzing my socks off and thought anyone out there thinking of fighting a conviction would like to hear that people do get off, I can only assume that the officer didn't have everything perfectly in order and my brief just slowly pulled him apart, I’m over the bloody moon

You think that the same doesn't happen with dangerous driving, drink driving, serious assaults, muggings etc etc ?

well they seem to get a small fine or community service that they dont turn up for instead of expensive & justified jail terms. so yes i think its all cost cutting in one way or another.

Why have we got one of (if not) the largest prison population per capita in Europe (IIRC) then ?

Well done mate...unlike the other initial two posters, I'm glad you got away with it, whether you did were caught at that speed or whether the copper got an inaccurate fix. It's not like you were doing it outside a school.

You can't be put in prison for speeding, it is not an offence that carries imprisonment as a sentencing option. rolleyes

More than 8.75 million people are held in penal institutions throughout the world, mostly as
pre-trial detainees (remand prisoners) or having been convicted and sentenced. About half of
these are in the United States (1.96m), Russia (0.92m) or China (1.43m plus pre-trial
detainees and prisoners in ‘administrative detention’ ).

The United States has the highest prison population rate in the world, some 686 per 100,000
of the national population, followed by the Cayman Islands (664), Russia (638), Belarus (554),
Kazakhstan (522), Turkmenistan (489), Belize (459), Bahamas (447), Suriname (437) and
Dominica (420).

However, more than three-fifths of countries (62.5%) have rates below 150 per 100,000. (The
United Kingdom’s rate of 139 per 100,000 of the national population places it above the midpoint
in the World List; it is now the highest among countries of the European Union.)

That's not what I said. I'm glad he "got away with it" too, but when you plaster it all over the net, how long will it be before it's an endorsable offence not to product your DL at the roadside?

Please name a 'victimless crime' that you can be imprisoned for.

ermm, are you off form today von?

speeding over a certain limit is called dangerous driving, for no other reason than the speed you are travelling regardless if your on a straight road in a car that is made to do 200 mph and doing 100mph, as an example, speeding is deemed dangerous driving and you can ultimatly go to jail for speeding. (see previous threads on here for proof)

but of course, you knew this and was just testing me, right ?

Wrong, the courts have said that is not the case.

http://www.mirror.co.uk/archive/2006/01/27/not-dan...

Speed is just that, for dangerous driving you have to show why it was dangerous 'in the circumstances'. That can be at a speed above or below the posted limit but it does not depend on the speed alone.

Mr. Vonhosen is not quite the man he was...

Hey, 'we' [drivers] think we have it tough, just think, at anyone time there are 4 to 6 un-married mothers with young children in Jail for not having a TV licence... now that is daft.
