As an aside to topic re sat navs,

Is there somewhere in law that states your tax disc has to be displayed in nearside corner of your windscreen?

Can you put it in any other window?

Just curious , like.

Just out of interest could you not get away with putting it elsewhere if your car doesn't have a glass windscreen but it's perspex or something similar instead?

This issue has been pertinent to me, as I hate having stickers of any sort on my windscreen - creates blindspots at night off-road on an already small windscreen - and so it has always been displayed on the nearside rear-quarter window (Defender 110).

Never had any problems as such - except sometimes in the Underground car park you seem to get a council busybody going around checking discs - then I get a 'ticket' saying that I've not paid my road tax, & that I've been reported to the DVLA.

Never hear anything further - as clearly they look me up in a second and see that I'm fully paid-up.

Be very careful if you do that in London, Arif.

Some councils will at a minimum have the car clamped, some even crush it. They will not check the computer, either - they say it is too costly and timewasting to check!!!

Also, if, as most, you get back before it is towed and can even prove you have a disc ( say it was in the glove box or even had fallen down ) they will still charge a clamp release fee - which is, of course, what they always wanted...some money is better than no money.

A friend had a computer that he complained was always going down on him. He never understood why I kept asking where he bought the program that did that! - Streaky

What I don't get is why we have to display visible evidence that we've paid the government their bit of money, but there's no requirement to provide visible evidence that the car's insured? I know which one I consider to be the bigger crime.

Nahhhhheeeeee Bloodnock, Minnie would say put your head on the bread board and use your loaf.......

But, but, but if an Excise Licence is displayed it says more than one that isn't and don't forget they do not give out discs until a current Inusrance has been produced...

Yep. An insurance certificate that may well run out the day after. (Mine, for example, is renewed on the 3rd of Sept each year, with tax due by 1st Sept.) So, valid tax disc does not imply valid insurance (or MOT, where applicable).

I seem to recall seeing visible insurance certificates in Ireland about 20 years ago. Don't remember seeing them when I was there a couple of years back, though.

Oh wow!! Thanks for that pointer! That does ring a bell, now. I'll be sure to attach it properly.
