Not a fleeing car thief this time

By Sky News SkyNews

A pedestrian is in a critical condition after being hit by a police car on an emergency call.

The victim - in his late teens or early 20s - was struck at around 2.30am in Finchley, north London.

Police say the marked car had its blue lights and sirens on when the accident happened.

The man's family have been informed.

A spokesman for Scotland Yard said: "A police car was involved in a collision with a male pedestrian at Tally Ho Corner.

"The marked response vehicle was on its way to an emergency call with its blue lights and sirens on when it was in collision with the pedestrian.

"London Ambulance Service attended and the pedestrian, believed to be in his late teens or early 20s, was taken to a north London hospital where he is in a critical condition."

Police are investigating the incident.

Fingers crossed for the guy, and for common sense to prevail when the officers have to explain their actions. Must be a terrible situation, for all involved

The issue here is we do not have full details to be able to say anything.
Was the pedestrian on the road?
Was he on the pavement?
Was he drunk and staggered in front of the police car?
How fast was the police car actually going?
etc.

It was at 2.30am.
Initial reports suggest the car had lights (and sirens? At that time?) on.

...initial thoughts must be the chap was drunk or drugged-up. Or possibly had headphones on...

But...lets wait for the investigation, eh?

Criticised if you do, criticised if you don't.
Me personally, if I can see there isn't danger I won't, if there is sufficient potential for hidden dangers then I will.

Agreed. I wasn't criticising, merely emphasising surprise - a) at the time of night to have sirens on what I presume to be a built-up area; and b) at the fact that, if true, the pedestrian still got hit.

2.30am on a Saturday morning there can still be quite a few people around on the streets in London. Including Tally Ho corner where there are pubs, clubs, kebab houses a plenty.
