I live in Swindon for my sins and the road sinage here is a joke. You go from different speed zones with no actual warning that is happening. The magic round about is a prime example, you enter in a 40 and you exit mostly into 40's appart from one exit that is a 30 but not signed.

Other lcations all through the town have 30s where the signs are right on the turn from a 40 so very hard to see. Often though there is only one sign, not one either side, just one sign.

My understanding was that for a limit to be enforced the signs have to be paired? Is that right?

Under straighforward limits on a road then under Traffic Signs and General Directions 2002 signs have to be place at either side of the road (single carriageway) or carriageway if a dual.

Like everything else there are exceptions to the rule i.e. at junction of a major road (40) with a minor road (30) in which case turning off the major there is only the need to put a 30 on the nearside of the minor. However joining the major off the minor there is a need to put 40 on the minor, no more than 20m either side at the junction with the major.

One can see the logic in that coming off the major then there is only one way to travel on the minor. Conversley there are two ways when coming off the minor.

so if turning from a 40 into a 30 there only has to be one sign on the near side?

Which would include an exit off a roundabout (40) onto a 30? If I read DVD correctly, in the reverse direction (i.e. from 30 onto roundabout), there needs to be only one 40 sign - as there's only one direction (left) you can turn - Streaky

The following will take you to the Highways Bible on signing:

http://www.dft.gov.uk/consultations/open/trafficsi...

whilst it is a consultation doc what it says about sign placement is valid.

Be aware if you are on a landline hook up then at over 2mb its a long download time.

Go to page 98 and all is revealed.

Enjoy
