As I have said before, the things which make the force valuable, preventing crimes, cannot be put into statistics.

But it can be evaluated.

The evaluation is the perceived control on the streets in the area that has some corelation with the presence on the streets and thereby preventing crime.

It is a bit seat of the pants but i think it has something to commend it.

In the mean time the only measure [unless you agree with my proposition above] is the figures shown in the OPs link.

In a report I'm working on, around 50% of forces were below average, with an astonishing 1 in 20 in the bottom 5%.

It was also so shown that whilst some forces have improved since last year, some (by these measures) have got worse.

Presumably around 50% of anything is below average, isn't that how averages work?

I think you missed tigger's irony there. (eg. not only is 50% the average line, but 5% is 1 in 20).
I believe he is making a valid point about the presentation of statistics.

Bear in mind Labour's idea of giving the BIB performance targets is to have a points system whereby the most insignificant matter addressed by a BIB (like telling a child to put away their plastic toy gun) ranks the same as stopping a burglar...points make prizes...

*Joins in*

Having said that, I work in the best performing force, but I live in an area covered by one of the worst performing forces.

*Dies of irony*

I want the police in this country to forget all about producing nice figures for the government to bandy about. Just let them get on with putting the scroates in jail where they belong.

All these figures do is give muppets (Mycroft or summat) and politicians a chance to score points.
