A5034 (Mereside Road), a link road with lots of bends, no pedestrians and little traffic joining it out of the big houses which line one side of it....

I have driven it for the last 27 years and have seen many cars in hedges and a couple stuffed against trees over that period. AFAIK noone has actually died on the road probably since the corners tend to slow even enthusiastic drivers down to an extent that "off" speeds are pretty low ~sub 20-30mph.

The nannies get the green light to tell us what we should be doing and suddenly (actually probably a year or so ago) it becomes a 40mph limit (formerly NSL)with "camera" signs and illuminated "watch out for corner" signs flashing at "speeding" oncoming motorists.

Now I am all for letting people know that there are potentially hazardous bends ahead and the illuminated flashing signs are a great idea as would be some ADVISORY speed signs in the ~40mph region and even 20mph for a couple of the bends and even a "Watch out, slippery when wet" sign would help !!

But what the T0SSERS have done is at a stroke (after 27 years of enjoying punting down this stretch (when conditions allow)) made me into a criminal !
This grates REALLY badly with me -why do we always dumb down to the worst possible driver and in the process make others law breakers ?
In Germany (on the Autobahn) one is responsible for ones speed as part of "driving with care and attention" -their law treats you like a responsible adult. If you mess up and drive to fast for the conditions then it is YOU who is taken to task by the authorities -where has the personal responsibility gone in this country ?
I used to be able to (Circa 1980) quite safetly take my MK2 RS2000 down their at 50-60mph so I'm damn sure that today's sports cars can do it as well when conditions allow.

Suffice to say that I do not respect this limit and detest those who support these controlling policies... RANT OVER -Breathe and relax smile

People have a job in the town hall and by god they are gonna do it!

If they don't 'keep at it' doing this sort of thing they will be made redundant, so for the sake of their children you HAVE to suffer!

You know all roads are dangerous... they have cars on them... case proven... that road is crying out for regulation... stands to reason... it has BENDS in it!

The irony here is the residents of the big houses probably requested the change.

However when local residents complain that they want 'their street' making safer by lowering the speed limit (er they didn't notice the road when they bought the house!!) it is they who are usually caught breaking the limit when speed checks commence.

Your case is just a small example where I live all the usual overtaking spots that I have used for years have been treated to solid white lines. Even though these stretches are perfectly safe for overtaking devoid of junctions crests houses and other hazzards. On the odd occasion you find a straight you can use to get past the traffic you have idled behind for the last half an hour you will find a plod with a speed gun waiting to punish you.

and yet on other roads crying out for white lines and no overtaking signs where there are junctions etc there are none in sight.

Forgive me for seeking clarification - but how does a change of speed limit make you a criminal? You only break the law by exceeding the limit, which is the same offence today as it was last month - just the speed at which you do this is different.

Whilst I feel your pain (I drive Nottingham to Skegness often, and nearly every bloody good overtaking point now has a camera on it...grrrr..) - I don't see your "criminal" issue.

When you say "punting" I'm assuming you mean punting below 60mph at ALL times? Cos if not you were a "criminal" before, and whilst the road may not justify a 40mph limit, I'm unsure what you're going on about.

I can perfectly understand what he means. There are loads of roads around me that for over 10 years I have enjoyed driving at speeds up to 60 mph (NSL). It would actually be difficult to go faster then that, but at least you could concentrate on the road.

Now you have to watch the speedo - not the road anymore. And with some do-gooders now crawling around at 35, you have no choice but to overtake and therefore making the journey more dangerous.

Needless to say that there have never been any accidents in the 10 years ...

They do it because they are paid to do nothing except "do something to reduce accidents"

What you think is irrelevant. Nanny doesn't care what you think. Just shut up and do what Nanny tells you. Or it's 40 minutes on the naughty step for you.

If there are cars gouing off as you say at 20-30 MPH what sort of road surface, condition, design is it? Would"nt a rebuild of the approach, bend or whatever be more suitable. Why not lobby the council and highways authority to improve the road to prevent these accidents.

More government-style knee-jerk "pile on the legislation" mentality. They just don't understand, and after 15 years of it I think they never will, that more and more legislation will not make things better (unless they are not really stupid and actually wish to create a nation of people who can't think for themselves.)

Ah, yes. That was once a lovely bit of road, now it's just frustrating. Mind you, it was frustrating before when you get stuck behind numpties slamming their brakes on for every bend (and especially when they nearly come to a stop going round the corner at the north end).

Never mind, the Tatton straight's not far away, and then there's the really rather nice Back Lane/Mill Lane drive down to the airport tunnels.

Just avoid the 5034 - the A556 is plain awful as well.
