Read on here that there are SPECS cameras sounthbound on the M1 at the M10 junction (J7) - that's my neck of the woods, and I've driven that stretch a lot, but never seen anything resembling SPECS up there.
Took a cruise up there today (at 69mph, just in case...), and there IS some sort of camera set up on the two consecutive overhead gantries immediately south of the M10 exit, but they don't look like SPECS. There's a small white camera on the gantry over each lane, and each camera has a smaller white device either side, not the round things on the normal SPECS set up.

My guess would be some sort of traffic monitoring system, as it's just prior to the M25 interchange. If I'm up that way again with a mate in the car I'll get a photo.

Anyone got any ideas as to what these cameras are, or who to contact to find out? Would the Highways Agency control that sort of thing?

That sounds like the cameras on the A42 B'ham-Notts road. Dont think they are SPECS, would also like to know what they are!

They come up on my Geodesy so they must be SPECS.

Can't see why they'd need two sets so close together (about 1/4 mile). Don't know how long they've been there, but I've driven that stretch a lot, usually at 80ish when there's not much traffic, and never had any letters through the door....

I saw tha same thing today on the M69 heading back up to the M1, unfortunatley I saw them a bit too late so I hope they are not any kind of speed detector coz I was flying!!

Somebody must know what they are??

They could be in place for impending roadworks? Thats what they did on the M6 near Manchester.

The origin blue i picks them up as SPECs as well. Interestingly though, there are no camera signs and no yellow paint. I wonder if they are just trialling them perhaps?

5th Gear had a interesting piece on all the road-side hardware. There is a new sort of device appearing, a camera with a single device attached at the side. Apparently these are some sort of number plate recognition device. "Used to track stolen cars around the country" or so they say. Definately one set on the M40 in Oxfordshire, on one of the bridges one camera for each lane. There is only one set though, but easily confused with SPECS.

The only set of SPECS I have seen is on the M6 in central Birmingham and they now have little yellow panels behind the cameras, just so they cannot be accused of hiding them..

Big Brother is with us....

NOT Specs.
Auto number plate readers yes, but not specs.
They are used as previously mentioned, to track cars of interest.
BIG BROTHER is watching (some) of us.
Whether they can or will be used for enforcement in the future I don't know.
I have a mate in Herts traffic, I will find out more.

I have wondered for some time why my Geodesy goes mad through that section of the M1. As I haven't seen any cameras nor any warning signs I just ignore it, and proceed to make progress. I have yet to get a ticket.

My assumption was that the Geodesy was picking up some form of camera on the M10 or is it an A road from St Alban that also joins at that point?

Maybe an email to Geodesy is called for!

LARGE HUMBLE PIE.....................................
AND....... A WARNING.
I have just had a reply from my Herts Trafpol mate, who confirms that they ARE SPECS cameras............
This is not what I was told a couple of months ago by a crusty old tosser from Hemel Hempstead.
My Trafpol source is 100% reliable and I apologise to anyone who has been for a blast down the M1 this afternoon.

*makes mental note*

They look nothing like the SPECS cameras I've seen elsewhere - not on blue poles, no yellow back plate, no warning signs. Still can't work out why they'd need two sets on consecutive gantries though, unless they're going to get us twice?! And why nothing on the SPECS "official" site, unless there come under the "other locations soon" heading? Strange.

There WAS an operation in Watford a while back with the plate readers, as it was in the local papers.

I shall be a tad more circumSPECt with the old right boot going through there next time...

Right, just realised that there WOULD be two sets of cameras if these were SPECS, as that's how they work - I think? Average speed over distance. It's just these look nothing like the usual system, and none of the other sites has photos of these things on the M1.

Discretion is in order at J7 methinks.

Anyone know if the relevant police force (or Highways Agency) is legally obliged to disclose the location of all their cameras? Might try and ask a few questions.

Why do they need specs on a motorway?

More to the point, who can I contact to confirm/deny what these cameras are? Can't see anything on the Highways Agency site, and I thought they were responsible for motorways?

Oh well, emailed the Highways Agency about it - the Herts Safety Camera Partnership site claims that the HA are responsible for cameras on truck roads and Mways, so I've asked if they can provide details of what these babies are, and if they are speed, sorry, safety cameras, how come they are not signed, marked etc etc.

Got to go, there's a large black car pulling up outside the door......
