Very very lucky.

I'm an eighteen year old lad (No, I don't drive a chavved up Corsa!), and I got an SP50 back in January (For ironically going to Santa Pod), and in June I went to pick up a friend from my local town , with my track wheels on, and the left front tyre was 1.5mm. I thought it was legal before, oops!

A copper saw and heard my car, came over, checked my car all over, £30 for a rear fog light out, NIP for tyre. Even had a go at me for my front fog lights not being wired in. I weren't being cocky at all, or anything!!

Anyways, I'm on my two year probation period, so I decided to go to court about it.

When I were there I asked for a ban, and got the shortest time ban possible (apparentley). 14 days.

The question remains, does this, and if so, affect my insurance, seeing as it's this short?

Thanks in adavance!

even though its short, its still a ban and i would imagine that your insurance would have something to say... you may ba a safe, decent driver. but unfortunately it will just go down as another 18 year old who has got banned

Gutted.

I'm with Quinn by the way, who didn't rasie my insurance when I declared my three points for the SP50.

I won't tell you the speed I was going, but it was 3mph above the "10%+2" rule, which is more than likely not actual.

So 60mph then? Or more likely showing on your speedo as 65

Or possibly 82mph - SP50 is the endorsement code for exceeding the speed limit on a motorway..wink

Makes my blood boil.

Reckon insurance sees a ban worse than the points?

Maybe if I explain the circumstances it might seem better?

You're lucky that the sp50 didn't affect the license but a ban will deffo have a negative impact.

Without wanting to sound funny you need to sit down and have a little think.
You are 18 so you have been driving around 12 months.
In that time you have
1)been caught speeding
2)been caught driving a car with illegal tyres
3)been caught driving a car with faulty lights
4)been banned

Thats not really a good record for your first year on the road do you agree.

As for the ban,you bet that is going to put your insurance up and no amount of sweet talking the insurance company is going to make you look good now.In there eyes now they will probably view you as a young inexperienced driver who speeds around in a unroadworthy car on bald tyres.

Seriously, sit down and have a think.

Apologies in advance if some of this doesn't sound too helpful...but I'm curious about a couple of things.

They give points out for going to Pod!? wink

Do you have to have 2 fog lights? I thought the norm was only for a single rear one. Likewise, I didn't think front fogs were necessary (ever LOL)? Still, you're looking at points for the tyre.

Yes, it will affect your insurance, a lot. Sorry frown I guess you'll also need to redo your test, or did you not actually get any points on this occasion, "just" the ban?

As mentioned, on paper you don't look like a great proposition to an insurer.

Hi mate, there is such a big insurance market nowadays that there are a lot of companies who are willing to insure convicted motorists. look in the back of car mags to find ones that specialise in people who have had bans. there are quite a few of them and if you call around enough companies your insurance wont go up that much.

Hey - cut him some slack wink - at least the guy's got insurance! I'd save the sermon for those that have the above and no insurance.

Do you not have to retake your test aswell? Because it's a ban within your first 2 years of driving?

As far as I can gather, the OP's claim is that he persuaded the Magistrates to ban him as an alternative to placing an additional three points on his licence.

Had 3 points been handed out, he would have amassed 6 in total and his licence would have been revoked under the New Drivers Act 1995. This would have meant re-applying for a provisional and passing another driving test.

As it stands, the OP claims that no additional points were awarded and, as such, he was permitted to re-commence driving immediately after the 14 day ban had been served.

I'd give the DVLA a ring, seems odd to me that if you get six points your licence is supended but you can have a ban on top of three existing points and not get a retake?

Have you had your licence returned to you by the DVLA yet?

That's how I read it - but TBH I think I might have preferred the retest to a ban...costwise, but I don't know how bad it would be insurance-wise for either, I'm guessing the OP has done the sums as he's "opted" for the ban

That's how I read it. Keeps him on the road for the max possible time, BUT will shaft him for insurance. You pays yer money and takes yer choice...

I suspect that he didn't think this through all the way and has actually made the most financially damaging choice, which was perhaps not what was intended.

This seems to indicate that it's OK for a new driver to be banned and still keep their licence....

That's another great piece of legislation isn't it?!

I'm afraid that from a lawyer's point of view you'll be lucky if anyone will insure you now.
