Police crackdown
Discussion
According to teletext - police today ran a 'crack down' on speeding and dangerous motorists in an area of Gloucester. (I found the AND interesting, I would have expected the BBC to miss out the AND)
2 given on the spot fines for using a mobile phone when driving.
8 given on the spot fines for not wearing a seat-belt.
2 arrested for unspecified reasons.
No mention of anyone caught speeding!
Number of police involved not stated.
is this a decent 'haul' for such an operation or would the police have caught more 'dangerous' motorists by driving around? More - as in a higher number and of greater danger.

I didn't know you could still get teletext. It seems completely redundant now.
I hate seatbelt fines. Why? I got a whopping AU$500 (about £200) fine for this in Western Australia. I was absolutely livid. Put me off the whole continent to be honest. I haven't really heard of many people getting fined for this here. Maybe it's something they're cracking down on now?

The Australians are very anal about this type of thing. I had recently arrived in Sydney in 1995 and parked legally sitting in my hire car. I saw a Traffic Warden, strickenly dressed as an overgrown Boy Scout, standing on the pavement and nodded to him and he responded. 5 minutes later he put a ticket on my car as the parking restriction had changes 2 minutes earlier. I asked him why he hadn't warned me but it was like talking to a deaf and dumb person he just looked through me.I hate seatbelt fines. Why? It's usually a campaign thing, advert in local paper telling everyone we're cracking down on seatbelts, then ticket those who either won't wear them or don't buy the local paper. Car driver with no seatelt (depending also on car type) is often a good indicator of other possible offences too - con&use, insurance, mot, as it (often, not always) indicates a leisurely attitude to road legality.
Most of us would also take a driver carrying unbelted kids to task.
Sometimes if I'm moving an unfamiliar car into or out of a tight space I prefer to have a bit more movement. I suppose I could move with the seat belt on fine, just personal preference I guess. So I usually put it on after I pull away.
The point is though, I don't see why I shouldn't be able to do something that endangers nobody except myself.

That depends on whether or not your body exits the vehicle and causes further damage, let alone the fact that you body may move around inside the vehicle and kill or injure others in there with you.Jasandjules said:

I guess it might be because we all have to pay the costs when it does go wrong.A compulsory two mile run before breakfast each day, and various other health maintenence policies?
....and then what?
Best wishes all,
Dave.

If you go up the top of a tall building & base jump off, there is a chance you'll get arrested if caught.

Best wishes all,
Dave.

sorry if this is upsetting, but it highlights how important seatbelts can be.
