Does anyone else find that whenever they are on a 60mph stretch of national limit road, they are sitting behind someone doing 40mph or 45mph? I can't actually remember the last time i did anywhere near 60 in a 60?!?

There we go! I'm not trying to say i want to just hoon it, but it's actually quite selfish doing it on single carriageway national limit roads. I believe that doing 40 or 45 in a 60 during your test will fail you as it's deemed as "not making progress" which i think is bang on.

There seems to be a large percentage of british motorists who think that the National Speed Limit is 40mph

Makes me laugh and curse (in equal ammounts) even more when they're doing 30mph even when they trundle past a sign that says 50mph confused

yup, in advanced driving they encourage you to get to the speed limit as soon as safely possible

nono

have you learnt nothing from the safety camera pratnership? Everytime you go above 30 in a 60 zone 27 children, 64 ducklings, 14 lambs and 135 puppies die immediately. 60 is in fact just the age of driver they believe should be on that road.

9 times out of ten the 40 numpty will carry on doing 40 in a 30 too.

Its why the traffic police (if you ever see any, take a photo, rarer than hens teeth these days) follow these numpties to let them know that they are mono-speeders..

hunts....

HGV's can only do 40 on such roads anyway, and there ususally one or more up ahead somewhere.

I have a 20mile A road drive, with few overtaking opportunities, to get to the motorway and I really might as well sit at 40. Risk life and limb to pass someone and 400yds later there's another vehicle doing 40.

I have noticed it a lot, and yes, I find it very selfish too.
Similar to people overtaking at 1mph more than the 'overtakee' in the outisde lane of a motorway/dual carriage way.

I go down a stretch every day. I come off the motorway (m69) and turn right on the roundabout, there's a piece of road about 3 miles long that loads of people do 40 on, there's no sign indicating the speed so they must just assume it's 40, it's not quite possible to overtake and it drives me mad. going the other direction there's a sign indicating its a 60 zome.

I've had the urge to rant about this for ages but I spend too much time behind people like that to post it.

I personally don't know why people do it. If they can't drive 60MPH in a 60MPH area (if safe to) then they shouldn't be driving. You normally find that the people plodding along at twenty miles under the speed limit, normally have a cue of a fair amount of cars stuck behind them.

And also, they tend to be the same ones who brake for no reason on straights, brake at a slightest of bends. Not because it's sharp, but because the roads not 180 degree straight, there must be the requirement to get those anchors down.

Grrr....

I'm rather tempted to buy a scrolling LED display and pop it at the bottom of my windscreen/top of my dash, and you can flip the text so that people can read it in their rear view mirrors. I would have a nicely worded short message asking them to ammend their speed according to the speed limit wink I'd love to see the results!

Yep - same here!

Come off the M61 onto a single lane NSL road.
The amount of people who actually don't see the signs and sit there at 40, and even 30, is very annoying.

These are the same people who flash at you when overtaken!

Yep, the buggers are everywhere and its 40 in a 60 and then proceed at 40 through the 30mph villages. tts!

I was following one on sunday night, a Metro no less. I waited for a gap and overtook and Mr Metro driver was flashing away at me like he was trying to get a mobile disco going. I've since consulted my highway code and apparently his flashing lights were to warn me of his presence. I ing know you're there you daft tt!, I've been following you at 40 mph for the last 10 miles, then I had to pull alongside you onto the other side of the road and go past you. The tt then left his main beam on and continued along without a care in the world presumabley blinding oncoming drivers with his numptiness. I swear he'll be sat at a computer now, logged into Pensionheads.com : 40 mph matters complaing about the wr in the BMW on the wrong side of the road. If I find that post, I'm tracking him down and beating his Metro so badly, it'll look like a 6R4 when I'm finished with it (not really officer!).

And relax. Happy Black Friday everybody!

I use a country lane to get to work and tend to overtake about 5-6 vehicles in the morning because they think it's ok to plod along at 30-40mph, brake for non-existent corners and straddle the line because they don't know how wide their cars are. Usually get beeping, flashing and hand gestures (not the good kind either) once i've overtaken. Idiots. They're the ones who'll be late for work! hahaha

Ah yes, the 40 in 60, 40 in 30 brigade, get right on my bloody nerves. Used to have a 40 mile commute each way a couple of years back, used to get them all the bloody time, although on some parts of it there were decent places to overtake thankfully.

Only one problem. You expect them to use their mirrors?

Me too. I'm taking the final drive out (3.44) and putting in a 3.7 to get extra "go" for safer overtaking. smile
