I had a bit of a run in earlier with the Police - as was at a friends party when 2 PCs turned up - complaining about noise. I went over, and politely asked why the Police had turned up rather than EHOs - as I had always been told in the past noise wasn't a Police matter, when I had complained.

The Policeman took issue with this and tried to get a rise out of me, asking if I was an expert on noise pollution etc etc, but I walked away, pissed off.

Why would the Police turn up on this occasion, rather than other times when I have called them out to nuisances?

Depends on what the person who dialed 999 (presumably) said to the call handler. E.g. I think they are fighting / about to fight.
Well, from what the OP said, the police turned up to deal with noise, not a possible fight or anything other than noise - Streaky

They are a public service & if they are spare with there being sufficient calls, why wouldn't they attempt to alleviate the problem ?
Ultimately it's something for the EHO, but there is the potential for a breach of the peace, which Police can deal with.

Of course if the EHO later comes he could call the Police as witnesses in any prosecution & they can give evidence as to the noise & attitude of the occupants to their request to turn it down.

Was the party very noisy? In which case what right did the party have to disturb the neighbors? Surely if it was kept down there would not be a problem to begin with?

Sorry but I have lived next to some real real weapons grade arseholes before who have played loud music night after night and have kept me and others awake. If you want to go out and make lots of noise after midnight, go to a club where they are licensed for it.

Not everyone wants to hear your mates music.
