Now I know how average speed cameras work, but I'd like to know how clever they are.

If, for a purely hypothetical example, a vehicle which was restricted by law to a limit of 40mph on a NSL single-carriageway road, were to exceed that limit but still stay within the nominal 60mph limit of the road, would the SPECS cameras "know" that that vehicle should be travelling at 40mph?

In other words, can SPECS tell what type of vehicle a number plate is attached to and act accordingly?

I don't think so, though I stand to be corrected.

Are the NIPs automated or do they have people checking the film and putting letters in envelopes? If the latter then the operator would know what vehicle the plate would be attached to.

I dont know myself, but i guess it wouldnt be too difficult to programe the system to check the tax class while looking for the address. obviously wouldnt catch transits using car limits though.

Too much effort to do manually, given the number of vehicles not over the limit in a SPECS zone, with insufficient cost-benefit frown . However, technically possible and relatively easy to do automatically - Streaky
