Think I may have been caught speeding the other day.
The road is a 30 limit, up a steep hill to a roundabout. Just after the roundabout was a speed camera van, pointing towards me from the opposite side of the road. I had a Merc sitting on my boot lid. I was doing about 35 according to my speedo. I may have been going a bit faster up the hill. Will it just be 3 points?

Are these ANPR camera's or do they have to pull you over?
I currently have a clean licence, Although I was caught speeding back in 1998, doing 85 in a 70 limit, would this go against me in anyway?

Many Thanks for any help.

If you were pinged and only doing an indicated 35 I suspect you'll be OK.Otherwise it'll be £60 please sir and here's 3 points for you.The previous ticket you had is well gone and won't affect the result of this one...AS far as I know anyway...IANAL...

Its impossible to predict what is likely to happen (or if you will actually receive a NIP) when even you appear unsure how fast you were travelling.

In general though, speeds of 35mph-50mph in a 30mph would ordinarily qualify for a Conditional Offer of Fixed Penalty (3 points & £60), subject to the driver having 8 points or less at the time of the offence.

No. If it was 'safety camera enforcement', then any detected offences would almost certainly have been recorded onto video cassette for analysis at a later date. Proper coppers would have been more likely to have pulled you at the time if they felt a 'quiet word' was required..

Not at all - those points are long since spent.

I would imagine you weren't being targeted anyway.

You said it was on the other side of the road.

Hmmm at the bottom of a steep hill on a 30mph limit road now where else to make easy money catching traffic coming down?

SS2, The reason i wrote according to my speedo is because i know speedo's are not known for their accuracy. When I saw the camera I looked at my speedo and I was doing just under 35.

Many thanks for the replies though. I guess I will wait to see if I get anything through the post!

Cheers

If your speedo said 35 you were probably doing 31-32...wouldn't worry too much...

Actually, if the speedo said 35mph, and his tyres and wheels are standard, then he was definitely doing between 31.5mph and 35mph (and not a penny more).

In the range of true speeds 25mph-70mph, speedos are permitted to overread by a bit more than 10%..

Volkswagen Audi Group Speedo's read 6% more

ie when your speedo shows 53mph you are only doing 50mph and at an indicated 106mph you would be only doing 100mph.

But this 6% difference worries me.

Its a 6% difference when the car is new with new tyres so presumably as your tyres wear that difference gets even greater to say 7%

Just think you will be booking your car into its 10,000 service 700 miles too early.

and your cars milometer at trade in time will be showing 7% more miles.

So your car should be showing 38,300 miles not 41,100 miles for example , enough to affect the residuals?

When you look at it like that, it could make a difference I guess. I wonder how far out my car's speedo is? Anyone know how accurate the speed readout on a handheld Sat nav system is? I would guess it has to be more accurate. Maybe I should compare the two! smile

The question is though, is the mileage calculation subject to the same inaccuracy as the speedo reading?

On both my previous and current Omegas, speedo vs GPS shows a 3-4% difference, whereas trip computer speed readout vs GPS shows a near-exact match (varying by less than 1mph regardless of actual speed) - this suggests that when fitted with new/nearly new tyres, the wheel pulse signal used to feed the trip computer, speedo and mileometer is pretty damned accurate, so in theory the mileage could be determined more accurately than the speedo error would suggest...
