BiB - 'xxx leptons' experience today!
Discussion
Sorry this is long-winded, but I'm still trying to believe it myself so had to write it down!
Driving on the M25 this morning, at speeds I would describe as enthusiastic...
Had a green Vauxhall thing behind me as I came off and he came off as well. I then jumped into a gap on the roundabout, came off an exit onto an empty dual carriageway and 'hoofed' it - complete with M button, so again fairly enthusiastic! I leveled out around x3x leptons and then slowed gradually for the upcoming roundabout after about 4-5 miles. At this point I noticed the same green Vectra had caught me up on the dual carriageway.
I crossed the roundabout and fed into traffic - at which point the grill lit up on the Vectra behind me in a nice shade of bright blue, and the passenger indicated I should pull into the layby a few yards ahead...
I was asked to step out of the car and while one of them looked at the tyres, the other one asked why I was in a hurry. I decided to play it straight and said the road was clear and I knew it had no junctions, so decided to 'let it go'; to which the response was that it wasn't totally clear as they were behind me... Other BiB (having looked at my £1,000 worth of brand new tyres) then comes up and asked questions, i.e. was it mine, had I had it long, was it modified, had I ever taken it on a track, where did I live, where was I going and why, was I aware that I was doing nearly 'x' compared to the limit, etc, etc.
I admit that at this point I was 'cacking myself' in a 'pass the soap' kind of way following recent news coverage of high speed sentencing...
They then started smiling and told me what a lovely noise it made as I accelerated away down the dual carriageway and they were stunned at the speed I'd carried through the bend off the roundabout from the M25! Followed by a short lecture on why we have speed limits for the public road to which I looked very sorry and made appropriate apologetic noises.
Driver walks back to their Vauxhall and passenger tells me to slow it down, save the speed for more appropriate times and have a good day. He then walks to their car and they drive away.
I think the police in the UK are fantastic!
I'm also very aware that I got very very lucky!

Had that loads of time in France, though mostly not stopped just waved on to give it some...
3 years ago I left the town of Foix racing a motorbike... 140-160mph on the dually [high-level] for about 5 miles, slowed for the one roundabout before another huge stretch of dually, joined by cops at the r'about, we headed off steadily [bike and I] only to have the cops give us the thumbs up!
Off we went... no ticket nothing.
Last year drove from Blois to Millau Bridge [had to do it, last time it was being built] 120+ for huge chunks no problem with cops at all... just waved us on.
Actually I think I must have been waved on to higher speeds by cops in france more than a dozen times over the years.
Never go fast near the ports though.
You were lucky, in France the attitude is cooler, the cops are cooler and driving is still by most as just another pleasure.
How different from here.

Ah...the sound of grinding axes How different from here.

Totally different in France, which is why they don't have speed cameras... Oh wait.
They'll ban you from driving there & then, as well as keeping your car if you don't pay up.

As well as the aforementioned 'headers' ripping out of the ports.
A difficult one this as to be honest even I wouldn't claim I had a right to do double a speed limit.
however in this case they saw you were in control and not endangering anyone (save for an unexpected puncture or wild animal crossing the road)
You were lucky indeed.
only 8 lives left mr kitty

Nice to hear but can't imagine its an everyday thing, must have had his quota of bans for the week
.
Did you not notice the other car keep or try to keep pace approaching those sort of speeds
. 30 years and not so much as a tug, let alone a point, dictates Rule No1; unless you personally know the driver of any car trying to follow you (even if you are seriously out accelerating it) slow down and let them past.
I would imagine you've expended 8 out of your 9 lives in one go there

I've just got back from a ride from Santander to Cherbourg. Four days, almost 1000 miles and didn't see a single camera or police car. 'Enthusiastic' riding all the way, and other road users are courteous and actually demonstrate lane discipline. Absolute pleasure from start to finish.
Got off the ferry in Poole, and in the 6 mile ride home, saw no less than 4 speed cameras, one scamera van and enough selfish driving to make me put the bike away until next year.

Yep, I suffer 'culture shock' every time I get off the ferry here.Got off the ferry in Poole, and in the 6 mile ride home, saw no less than 4 speed cameras, one scamera van and enough selfish driving to make me put the bike away until next year.
Did you hug the coast [Bordeaux] or drive across to the Loire?

Yep, they drive like the have paid for the road don't they!.. shame on them.
Yeah, like they've paid for whichever piece of road you are currently using.Edited by Brother Mycroft on Wednesday 24th October 23:24

I love it!
Driving in Naples and getting to Sorrento is one of the great drives!
I like the way the Neapolitans queue at lights, the road may be a two laner in your direction but the lanes are 3.6m each that means there is 7.2m to fit cars across... therefore with all that road it is insane not to use it all so 3 cars queue and sometimes 4!
Brilliant!
It works too.
We should do that and creep off to the left against a red [they do that in Naples too, only to the right.
