Today I am insuring a new motor however my other half has just informed me that she has 3 points from driving in a bus lane. The offense was committed in June 2004 and I am not sure how long points are:

A) Active on the license
B) Visible on the license

After a couple of conversation with friends some say that the points are on the license for 4 years but only count for 3 years!

If someone could shed some light on this is would be greatly appreciated.

You normally have to disclose them for insurance purposes for five years.

That is correct, the points count towards "totting up" for 3 years, and can be removed from the licence after 4 years (if you give the DVLA some money). As mentioned, most insurers want to know about any endorsements for up to 5 years.

3 years valid for totting up
4 years before they can be removed
5 years disclosure to Ins. Co.

This is for minor stuff like speeding and bus lanes DD and DIC are longer I believe.
