Talivan Question
Discussion
Encountered one of these for the 1st time on my route home from work yesterday and the question is are they forward firing, or rear firing? If they can do both do they usually park on the same side of the road as they are targeting? If they are forward firing are bikes exempt?
And why the fcuk do they have orange lights on the roof and not blue?

Rear firing and side firing. Bikes are targetted going AWAY from the van and the operator then gets a nice shot of the rear plate too.
Thats ok then because he was on the opposite side of the road firing towards me
to be fair to him he'd have been alot busier if he'd have been aiming the otherway as he was parked at the bottom of a steep hill and you'd do more than 30 rolling down it on a pushbike
The device can register speeds both going away and travelling towards the operator. It does not matter which way it happens to be facing. A going away shot is captured to the film pre-fixed by a - sign. so if you have been captured yourself at 44 mph in a 30 mph, the evidential photo will show the speed as -44mph.

By the time I got level with him I was traveling at about walking pace and I didn't see him turn around and note my reg, and surely theres no way that can stand up as evidance anyway
If there are two opertors in the van and a bike goes through above the limit, then one of the operators will obtain the index of the bike as it goes past the front of the van. It is legal and it does stand up in court, exactly the same if I saw you climbing out of Toad_oftoadhalls window at 03.00 a.m. with his television under your arm.
He will write out a pro forma statement form and submit this with the video film which can produce stills from within the van itself. Attach the copy of the photo produced in the van and a summons will be issued in the same way.
There is no escape for bikes
I'll worry about if I've been done, it depends how far up the hill he was aiming, and even if he was aiming at my side of the road anyway, but I would have thought that a note of the reg number is open to error, my bikes pretty distictive and with a legal numberplate but if your on a Blue R1 with a small plate a letter out by the guy reading the plate and it could go to the wrong person and if the plates are consecutive with another blue R1 then someones in for a summons in error and would have a problem talking their way out of it in court

Where was it Raceboy?
They seem to have favourite spots here in Notts. Several I know of are:
London Road toward Trent bridge
Wilford Lane
Near Ikea (just round the corner toward Eastwood)
Somercoates up near Alftreton
And I am fairly sure I spotted one on the M1 on one of those police embankment thingies between J26 and J27 a few weeks ago...
Any other distinctive markings BTW?

1st time I've seen one there, to be fair I'm not 100% it was a speed camera it could have been a TaxDisc van but they have put speed camera signs all down the road
The usual place they 'hide' is outside the City Hospital in both directions
