SPEEDING CAMPAIGN M40/M4/A34

Not that this will apply to any of you of course but just in case.....

Thames Valley Police are mounting a 6 month speeding campaign from the on the M40, M4 and A34.They have been equipped with the following unmarked vehicles:

BMW 535I, 1 Silver & 1 Dark Green
Seat Cordoba 2.0 VTI in Silver
Vectra 2.5 SRI- 1 Black & 1 Red
Omega 3.0 SRI- 1 Burgundy
Volvo S40 T4- 1 Red
Volvo S70 - 1 White
VW Bora 2.3 VTI - Red
VW Passat VR6 - Silver

They will also be using a helicopter between junctions 4 and 8/9 of the M4 from next Monday for a 2 week period, plus additional mobile speed cameras
on Bridges around the Maidenhead and Slough junctions. Please feel free to pass this on.

This is an elaborate hoax circulated by email and fax. Thames Valley police say that they don't even have the listed cars mentioned in their pool of
vehicles. (but would they admit it anyway? - John)

There was a mobile gatso underneath the M4 elevated section in Chiswick this morning. Not sure how long that has been there though.

I'd go along with this being a hoax
There's a date in the page source code in 1996 and the M4 bit is somewhere in the middle of a whole list of these urban myths. So that implies it's an old one as well.

Also, some of the car models don't actually exist which also backs up the hoax thing.

Which is all just as well given that most traffic on the M4 at the times I travel is doing comfortably in excess of 80mph. Actually the M4 stretch from London out to Windsor does seem remarkably free of speed checks in general - I don't believe I've ever seen a camera van on an overhead bridge for example.

But there are road works out between junctions 5 and 7 at the moment. I've not seen any cameras in there (then again I've not seen many people working either) but that would be a logical place to put some.

Of all the places not to exceed the posted limit, roadworks have to be high on the list. They're nearly always staked out with live cameras and more tightly monitored than Stalag 17. Whether or not there are any workers to protect is nothing to do with it of course - but a little more congestion should have us rushing off to the bike shop, no?
