"Some Talivans are being suspended at the moment because the sites that they use arent totally legal".

This is true because i have seen them all parked up gathering dust as they have nowhere to go that is legal.

What do people think?

Oh dear, what a shame, never mind.

It just goes to show that the whole thing was not thought out properly in the first place and all that tax payers money has been wasted. A pity when school, hospitals etc seem to really need it.

Or they could have spent it on proper road safety improvements.

Oh, I forgot each one has probably already paid for itself 50 times over (or more). (Make of this what you will I can't be bothered with imoticons today).

Oddly enough I am amused! After all no one is above he law and the police are not allowed to use illegal methods to catch murderers, rapists etc, so why should be allowed to use illegal parking spaces to catch motorists?

I don't believe that speeding is as big a problem as it is made out to be. The biggest problem is inappropriate speed, and this can be combined with inapproprite actions by motorists. It certainly seems to me that the quality of driving on our roads has deteriorated over the last few years, and this must, in part, be due to the lower police presence.

Lets replace Talivans with real police officers in liviered cars, who aren't obsessed with targets, but are obsessed with educating drivers.

Its a way forward

Now lets put that north wales chief of police back into the dusty old drawer where he crawled from one fetid day and make some more progress

Funny enough, but i was always told that prevention is better than detection (unless of course you have revenue to collect or targets to achieve).

tonyrec, what sort of locations are considered illegal.

I may have been zapped by one this past weekend - see
www.pistonheads.com/gassing/topic.asp?t=47062&f=10&h=0

This van was parked on the grass verge at the side of the dual carriageway (i.e. to the left of the hard shoulder). Is this legal parking for these vans? Seems a pretty dangerous place to be located to me (envisage tyre blowout, loss of control, smash into van, kill civilian operator and driver of car).

Illegal is dangerous in my opinion.

Obviously wherever a Van parks is under scrutiny and on things like grass verges, its deemed ok for the Electricity/Gas/Telephone companies to park and do their work but when its one of these vans then all hell is let loose.

Yes but the Electricity/Gas/Telephone companies usually have to dig holes in those locations to fix a problem. They don't have alot of choice. Not a job I would particularly like myself.

Sorry, I do not know you, but to me your post seemed in the " I saw a talivan in xxxxx is this legal" style post.

Once again I apologise.

I am sure you would rather see funds going to more constructive policing rather than the easy option.

Could you smash out a headlight and give them a ticket for the team

I just believe that Motorists need to be stopped and reported for offences such as speeding by a real live Trafpol.

Apart from the fact that the persons correct details will be obtained (even if the vehicle is not registered to them), but also.....it may make people be more cautious in future after they have been told the error of their ways at the roadside.

You see Deltaf....i can still be mean....lol
Have one for me!!!!

Here goes on my big problem.

A camera cannot read the road or conditions. Ie: 90 mph on a motorway in perfect conditions ( dry, daylight,no other traffic) may be far safer than 50mph on the same stretch in bad conditions. If I was caught by uniformed trafpol in the first circumstance I may be lucky and get let off with a warning. If there was a camerea there will be no warning but NIP.

I am sure if I was caught speeding and given a good talking too I would think again about speeding. Cameras cannot differenciate, IMHO a trafpol in a car can.

In addition to this.....lets say that you were caught doing say 105mph on the M25 early on a Sunday morning and you were caught by either a Camera or a Trafpol.

With the camera conviction you will more likely get a ban....however with a Trafpol, he will have in his scene notes a lot (well ok), some info which you yourself can rely on in mittigating circumstances which might just, and i mean just, enable you to keep your licence for just that little bit longer.
