Hey guys wondering If you could give me some information here...

What is involved in joining the force, and becoming a Traffic cop? Eg what qualifactions, past experience, average age etc. Was wondering how long it actually took to be out on the road pulling over people?

(Asking because Its a possible career choice, but want to know more first)

Over the past few years the entry requirements to join the Police service have changed. The upper age limits and height restrictions have been scrapped. After your initial application form (inc paper sift)you have to pass a general examination thats tests your general level of knowledge.
This includes English Grammar and Numerical skills.Next is a fitness test leading to an interview.

Once this is all out of the way and you are accepted, then you have to do a minimum of 2 years on Division learning the job before you can apply to specialise.

After this, and after showing an aptitude to a specialised post such as Traffic you can apply when vacancies arise.

In my experience in the Traffic Unit,it is quite rare for someone with little experience to be accepted, but its not unknown.

Once accepted for the unit (Metpol) you have to pass 3 courses.
The first is a Motorcycle course, next is an Advanced driving course then a basic level City and Guilds course in Motor Vehicle examination.
These are the absolute minimum qualifications that a Trafpol needs and there are about 10 other courses if you are fortunate that you may be sent on in order to make you highly qualified to do the job.

That's me out then!

Shame because I'd love 37 hours a week working on Vice.

I think the only area I would go into is the Mounted section. How do you get into that...?

So can you join the police if you have had or still have various things lurking on your drivers license?

Are there any point classes (apart from the obvious DD codes) that will instantly render you not likely to be picked?

6 valid points.
It probably wouldn't stop you being selected but they may well ask you questions about your judgement which is what they are looking for as well as other things.

I joined the Police at 19 years old. I was on the Traffic Div before I was 22.
Selection is very much down to your abilities to fit the specific roles. This is the basis of being accepted into the Police per-se. Once you have been accepted and completed your basic training, you will have to complete 2 years probation satisfactorily before you can even think about specialism.

Ordinarily you should look to around 4 years service before you will be skilled enough in general Policing matters to be elligable for selection to a specialist department. This may vary from person to person depending on how quickly they adapt and how good they are at those general skills and how hard they work to acheive their aims and objectives. There is quite a lot of competition to get the sorts of high profile specialisms and the managers only want the best. When jobs are available, they are advertised in the force weekly orders paper. If you want to be considered, you have to fill in an application form stating the reasons why you feel you will fit the role and be a benefit to the service by being selected. In my force you also need to submit your last 2 annual appraisals with the application form so they can see what you have been doing to help meet your own development needs and the aims and priorities of the area or division you are on and the force priorities. This appraisal is self evidenced by the good work that the officer does over the year and then agreed by his/her first line supervisor. Sickness and attitude are all taken into account. No manager wants someone from the sick, lame and lazy brigade!

Traffic Div is one of those departments where they are looking for many attributes to make the whole officer. Not just your ability to drive a car fast.

Madcop,

Cheers for explaining that!

You probably wont believe this but I still do get urges to join the police force. I have a lot to learn more than anyone and who knows, maybe I can change things from within.

I did apply when I was 18 1/2 but was basically told to "go and see a bit more of life first"

Its a shame because they would have had a dedicated hard working copper. Now I have found a quite high paying job and im 23 and settled I have no reason to join.

Dont think I could get in now anyway because of my past :|
