Has anyone heard of Bikesafe....i know that some of you have but probably most havent.

I can only speak for the Bikesafe that is run by the Met Police and is incidently run by mates of mine from my Traffic Unit.

It basically consists of a day of one2one tuiton and the day starts at the famous Ace Cafe which is on the North Circular Road (A406) NW10.
As much tea/coffee as you can hold in your bladder and a nice healthy fry up at lunchtime.

The nitty gritty is two, hour long assesment rides on a mixture of roads (going out West into the Thames Valley) where you will be given advice etc etc, some of which you might want to take on board.

All in all its a very informative and enjoyable day which im sure that you will get a lot out of and the guys doing it are top class, (and true bike nutters) which makes the course all the better in my eyes.

All this for a small fee of £25 per rider.

There is a website address of www.Bikesafe.co.uk and this will lead you into the various Police area that are running Bikesafe and their relavent contact numbers.

The Metpol course is run by Sgt Paul Mostyn and he can be contacted on 0208-7334673.
Say that you know me and you might get extra bacon!

On a serious note though, wherever you decide to do it.......have a good day.

I did it a couple of months ago, and met Paul who is a good bloke. I'd recommend any biker do it.

As I mentioned elsewhere, I did it and can thoroughly recommend it.

Big up to Colin, Jeff, Paul and the rest of the traffic guys.

They do have an alarming rate of pipe smokers though

Tony, I've sent three separate e-mails to them over the last three months registering information and have so far received no response at all.

Anyone is welcome.

If you look at the website there are a number of Forces that are running it......i only have the experience of the one thats run from our unit but i wouldnt hesitate to recommend the others as well.

For anyone that is thinking about it, make sure that your bike has legal tyres etc and is maintained.
They are not too bothered about race cans and the like....
Its all about seeing how you ride and not that of your bike!

I fancied doing the Thames Valley one but they seem to have a some what different approach. They do a video (self help kinda thing) but last time I enquired the course was booked up months (almost years) in advance.

Might well give the met boys a call. Thanks

I did an advanced riding course in Manchester about 12 years ago. I can't stress enough the benefit of spending time with these boys and would recomend it anyone who rides a bike.

One point that has stuck in my head ever since then was when the instructor asked us a question:

'You're riding down the road and a car in front has its right indicator on, what does it mean?'

We're all keen and start piping up with..
'the car is about to turn right...'
'the car maybe about to overtake the vehicle in front'
etc etc etc..
'nope nope & nope' was his response - 'it means the bulb works'.

It was a constant stream of this zen like wisdom that changed my approach to riding and driving forever.

Almost everyday that I drive one of his pearls of wisdom saves me from making what could be a costly mistake.

Highly recomended - so go do it!

And if there's no indicator flashing - maybe the bulb's broken! Figure out the worst thing(s) the other vhicle could do - and assume they will do it just as you're passing.

The biggest phrase surrounding both the Advanced Car/Bike course is....

ALWAYS EXPECT THE UNEXPECTED.

If you do then you wont do too much wrong!
