Is there anyone here who can say..

They don't and never have exeeded the speed limit?
I speed on virtualy every journy I make. I like to think its in apropriate places and appropriate to the surroundings.
Just wondering if there is any one here who never has
ps. can we leave out any comment about whether its apropriate or not or whether i'm a dick for speeding etc. leave that for another thread
Ledfoot has brought up an interesting point...
When there is a nice SCW bit of NSL road and im stuck behind "Mr & Mrs 30 in a 60", when I do finally overtake or get around I feel like I need to speed up to make up for lost time.
Think about it, if you get stuck behind loads of numpties doing half the speed limit your journey could take double the time.
They are infringing on your human rights, more accuratly - the right to enjoy your vehicle. They have signed a form saying they can competantly drive to test pass standard and I know for a FACT that if I were to do 30 in a 60 where the conditions were dry and clear then I WOULD FAIL!!!!
Instead of trying to prevent people from speeding and causing accidents, stop trying to cure and annihalate the source - F

If the speed limits were in any way/shape/form sensible then I would consider them as good guidance.
But they are not.
I accept that a lot were instated in the early 60's and today only have relevance to LGVs. So they are now being reduced?
So 1 speeding ticket in 24 years driving says?
(good mirror technique mainly)

My right foot is exceptionally heavy unfortunately
I would think the vast majority of the public speed at various times of the day without even realising it.
Erm apart from my Mum that is, who insists on sticking to the limits WHATEVER type of road she is on. Waste of time giving her a car with 5 gears when you only use the first 2!

Indeed. Let me give you an example. The B3270, which is the road the parallels the M4 near junction 11 and leads you towards the A327 (towards Shinfield and Arborfield).
For ages this was NSL which I personally felt was a little fast for the number of sideroads etc., so I would often do 50 as I felt it was a more appropriate speed. Sometimes I'd do 60 late at night when I felt it was appropriate.
Now it is a 40mph limit.
What is now the right speed for that road? Still 50mph, in my opinion. Only now that is illegal.

Not when I'm driving down it
which, I admit, is usually late at night. It should be NSL, it's trunk road width for most of it's length, only one direct side road (which has it's own turning lane), the rest join at roundabouts (full size, not mini ones) and no pedestrian access.
How's work Jon? I hear you're looking to come back for a month

No. But I respect 30s as they're usually there for a reason ditto most 40s. Totally misplaced 40s and 50s pi55 me off severely and I tend to treat this with the disdain they deserve. Tending to keep it legal more and more though (
) as I can't risk getting points and the yellow peril is everywhere round here

I agree MrsD
I was actually followed home by a cop car last night, apart from the 30 zone villiage I pass through that I always do 30 on the nose in, I usually do at least 5 - 10 mph over the speed limit and more on the 50mph roads on the rest of the way. Last night I stuck ridgidly to every limit, its bloody difficult I spent more time looking at my speedo than the road. And it took me at least 5 mins longer to get home.
Edited to add, 5-10 mph over limit doesn't sound much but as I am on 2 years probabtion of which I have another ear to run, I can't afford to be caught doing much much more than that over the limit. 6pts and I have my licence revoked.

I must say I'm finding my rate of progress slowing further and further down the numpty dirt track scale.
This is probably psychological in part: recent stories about bikers being banged up for the sort of infraction that any self-respecting performance car owner may occasionally sample for extremely brief moments every once in a while give me the willies.
As does the fear of shrub-dwelling BiB with VASCAR kit and all the rest: indeed, I drive with such circumspect that I'm now probably more concerned with bridge/sliproad-based plod, cunningly hidden GATSOs and the vile scourge of myriad SPECS and Truvelo too, than the bleedin' road ahead!
It's a frickin' war zone out there, no matter how much IAD type practices you employ.
(Oh dear, mini-rant developing: bollocks, here we go!)
Why oh why can't plod stop crumby driving rather than pure, technical speeders? It's the ultimate example of technical law breachment which under many circumstances simply warrants little more than a flash of the blues and a 'tut-tut' from our friends in the Z-cars.
30 mph? I doubt 10% of motorists obey this limit - the one that I follow zealously - instead, preferring 35-40 because frankly, you feel like you're moving...
Get the m-way limit to 90, start pulling over and retraining/banning(!) the abusers of the middle lane and for the love of Mother Mary, remove ALL speed traps from non-urban areas.
Hoo-bloody-rah!

Like many on here, I obey 30s (well OK, there's a couple where I speed up a wee bit before the NSL plates). Most 40/50s are loosely adhered to, but NSL does still mean unlimited doesn't it
Also depends on the car. In the 'B I don't speed because it takes long enough to stop even below the limits. As for the Jag, well Jaggy's naughty, Jaggy likes going over ninety

Because running traffic patrols is hideously expensive for very little measurable (that's not to say real) return. Traffic cameras=reliable, unequivocal way of capturing actual traffic crimes. Whether that's fair/reasonable/whatever is by the by.If you're trying to determine criminal justice policy capturing 100% of 'criminals' has got to be very appealing !

Probably because the only reasons for it that are given are ridiculous adverts that serve only to make Mr. F C Wit think (correctly) 'my car would stop much better than that' rather than 'hmm, killing people-that's not good'.
If a level of driver education could be brought into being whereby there was an understanding that kids will always follow the football into the road and all adults will occasionally fail to look (drunk, pissed, worrying about something else-we've all done it) and that, at 30mph 1)chances of avoiding the accident are much greater 2)even if you hit someone the chances of them being seriously injured are much lower. Some would dismiss that as thinkofchildrenism, I wouldn't agree, 30mph is a very sensible residential speed limit
providing it's used in the right place ! derestrictor said:

Absolutely. A few more big brightly coloured police cars would improve the 'feel' of motorway driving no end, as well as, hopefully, reducing the instance of numptyism and educating drivers who are doing something stupid - that works both ways though, speeding can be as stupid as trundling along at 50 in the middle lane, it depends on the particular circumstances.
...and relax.
In answer to the question which started the thread I can say that I honestly try not to speed. Don't always succeed mind you, but most of the time legal.
I have a calibrated speedo courtesy of the local finest so I know that for example 72 indicated is cock on 70, 31 is 30 etc etc. Find that helps.
As for limits below NSL obey absolutely 100%. Why? Well its because in order to set that limit I assume that the local authority has had to go through due process in order to legally set a limit different from what the road would otherwise be. Done properly that needs input from various people / organisations and honestly feel that for me to come along and *in real time* make the judgement that this limit is a load of hollyhocks is arrogant in the extreme. Of course the matter whether the limits are set in the proper fashion is another matter. I get the impression that the set limits are less intuitive than they used to be.
If that means I have to put up with goons climbing all over the rear bumper in 30's only for them to disappear backwards at the next NSL then so be it.
As for NSL's that is another matter and generally must say at one time used to take these as fair game, but drive appropriately. Now self preservation, or licence preservation prevails.
A prime example of the barminess is the A17 Newark/Kings Lynn. Used to be NSL most of the way, lots of *sensible* overtaking opportunities. At the villages one slowed down to 30 max 40. Now look at it!
I don't blame the b.i.b. troops out on the street at all. Its the politicians' fault, and if we object then there is a constitutional process to sort it. ie get em out and if that means starting our own party, well why not?
sorry for the slight rant.

I'm only in a humble Escort, and frankly, anything over 90 scares the crap out of me, so I tend not to....however, I find a nice country A or B road good for the odd squirt. Well, dribble really, given the non performance of my humble chariot, but you know what I mean.
Urban 30s always try to stay bang on, but if it means more attention to speedo than road, then sorry, I'm safer at 35 and looking where I'm going.
Drove up the A2 from the M25 a few weeks ago (don't know where exactly, not my neck of the woods) - four lanes, no side turnings, 50 limit....why?
A thought too re the KSI approach to camera positioning - if, as seems to be the case with the Limehouse Link, the K aspect is from joyriders, how exactly are cameras going to improve things? I'm sure your average Burberry capped scrote in a stolen XR3 is going to be crapping himself at the thought of points on his licence, eh? Frankly, as long as nobody else is involved, these prats can carry on removing themselves from the gene pool for all I care.

Limits??? What Limits???
NSL = NO SPEED LIMIT, and thats they way they get treated. I can't be arsed to sit behind Mr Numpety Numpty for mile after mile after mile after mile, so I'm past at every opportunity, and then just accelerate up to a speed at which I feel comfortable and can see within my stopping distances - which means that three-figure speeds cross-country are attainable, achievable, and very satisfying..... slow for the bends, accelerate away from em. No heroics, no squealing tyres, just safe, rapid progress.
20/30/40/50 - again, I'll let the conditions dictate - if its clear and no parked cars/pedestrians, then 40+ in a 30 is OK, if its parked cars/pedestrians, then under 20 in a 40 is just fine
Flippin nerds - had one yesterday - passing a stream of idjits nose to tail at 45 in a 60, in front and away before they even knew what was happening and the PILLOCK coming the other way (a good 400 yds away by the time I got past the queue) gesticulated like a banshee on heat - So I smiled sweetly (as only I can) and flipped htem the bird, happy in the knowledge that they will never experience the nirvanah of rapid motoring ......
I'm an un-repentant speeding sinner so NERH!
