I do hope safety is the sole reason for installing this Big Brother sub surface (potentially invisible) equipment. I expect to see bloody great signs advising motorists they are entering an area where their average speed is recorded between point A and point B.

This may lead to a reduction in the number of speed related accidents. This may make the project appear a total success. Oh hang on Transport for London will be £250,000 down the drain. Hmmmmmm maybe they'll concentrate on safety only when they've got their £250k back twenty times over.

DAZ

PS - Any research carried out into the actual causes of the accidents listed in the news article? I somehow doubt it.

Hmm, I seem to recall seeing an indicated 175km/h (110mph) on the speedo of my old BMW 6-er, whilst the Porker in front was accelerating away in the tunel... at 1:00am

I use this road regularly and whilst I can understand that it can used as a bit of a "drag strip", the limit of 30 mph is absolutely ridiculous. It is a dual carriageway with separate tunnels for traffic flows in each direction, since they have introduced (what looks like) new cameras a couple of weeks ago (widely publicised), the speed of general flow in the tunnel has noticably reduced and from what I see most people seem to be sticking to 30, rather than getting points.

Obviously the numpty scamera advoator would smile and say this is exactly what should be happening, however concentration goes out of the window, to be replaced with frustration and people now seem to drive at 30mph about six inches away from the bumper in front.

Perhaps we should simply have someone walking in front of the car holding a red flag!!! Yes it's possibly safer but it's taking the p!ss!

I want to know whats wrong with the 25% that observe the speed limit? I mean, nice snaking piece of tarmac in a tunnel.

Oh well, as long as they don't put Camera's on that lovely straight with fast roundabouts parallel with the City Airport.

I'm not condoning excessive speeds, just saying that 30mph is very low on a dual carriageway with nothing coming the other way.... would a sensible balance be too much to ask?

Not yet, but I have seen cops with laser guns down the far end where theres the "dummy" roundabout.... so you have been warned!

Shhhhhhhh!! Don't let on! This is my favourite low density traffic exercise area - good fun, especially the last roundabout / chicane eastbound .... all at the posted 40mph (ridiculous!!!) of course....

It would appear this new camera is manufactured by a British company called Monitron International based in Kidderminster, Worcestershire. Details about the system are here and it has been granted Home Office Type Approval..

I also live near there. The scary thing is that there are 5 digital cameras in the tunnel, 5 on the approach (The Highway) and 5 on the exit (Aspen Way, yet to be installed). There have been 15 serious accidents (at least two of which were joyriders who were just doing natural selections work) in 3 years, with 80k journeys per day that's one accident per 6.5m journeys! Unfortunately that means that they'll NEVER to be able to prove any difference in safety (at least in my lifetime) so there's no hope of ever losing the cameras either (nor from a revenue generation point of view either). So in one careless day it would be quite easy to rack up 45 points for doing a perfectly reasonable 40 along the road and receiving in what amounts to a lifetime ban. 30 in the tunnel is ridiculous, however 30 on The Highway bit isn't so stupid as I've seen two ex-bikers being dusted away on my morning walk to work.

I suspect the reason why the cameras were installed was because some accidents happened during peak hours when queues built up. Because the tunnels curve and sightlines restricted, fast moving vehicles ran into the back of the queue.
Damn shame tho', used to enjoy blasting through there on the bike with the exhaust echoing off the tunnel walls.

eeeek. Cruise control set to 30, and I glanced at the speedo & saw 36 on the down slope.... any chance this is going to get me a surprise in the post - or is it measured over the entire length of the tunnel as per SPECS ? this is a genuine oversight on my part and I guess if I get a ticket, I'll have to own up to it. Annoying none the less, as I had no intention of "speeding".

Fun.

When going through a couple of weeks ago in a dodgey taxi, the camera flashed him twice about 100m into the tunnel. Wouldn't have thought this is average speed?

No flash... I thought these were fwd facing scameras? I'll be narked as anything if I get a ticket. To think I was going to write a thread about how cruise-control was the answer to my prayers - eg, watch the road and not your speedo type thing. So annoyed.
Cheers anyway - how fast was your dodgy taxi going?

But i thought that most bikes don't have forward facing number plates, so they must be exempt!

AFAIK the tunnel has both Gatso style camera's and the abililty to calculate your average speed through, so as long as your at 30mph through the gatso zone (marked out with the usual white lines on the road surface) and make your average speed 30mph from start to finish I imagine you'd be just fine (no pun intended!).
