Hi

I was to modify a car plate to compress a "3" into an "i" or "L" character, but still leaving it as a 3.

Nothing else changes.

Okay - its not 100% legit - but I've seen worse around - whats the real-world story?

PS - Guy on a porsche near me has BA51ARD....

I am assuming you wish to know the penalties etc etc.

AFAIK it is a £20.00 Non Endorsable fine but apparently get done 3 times and they can take the plate off you and issue a 'Q' (Bad News)

Will you get a pull. Depends.
Pays your money, takes your choice.

My plate above. I got stopped once and coppers were good about it - said get it changed and we'll do nothing. I then got it put legally (A10 NYH) and had to get an MOT station to sign a bit of paper the BIB gave me and then send it away to them.

I got stopped after 3 months though. Then sussed what it was: the traffic police (the volvos on the motorway etc) are who stopped me. I've been followed, and have followed, MANY different police cars in and around the towns and they have never blinked an eyelid. So, I have my back plate totally legal always, and have the front plate put on with velcro. All the time I'm in and around towns I keep the "Tony" plate on - and when I do a big motorway journey I take it off. Takes no time at all and works a treat.

I still think you can work out my plate in "Tony" form - but I have seen some - eg H17 RKT was turned into MARK T (bit dodgy) you have difficulty trying to work out the legal numbers. Don't take the pi$$ too much and the police will be fairly sensible about it - they'll ask you to change it, and if you get caught again then they'll do someting about it. To be honest - I kind of respect that in the police (even though they did make me change my plates !!)

Hope that's of help

Tony

It does - and nice plate.

Someone turned THAT into MARK!?

I just want to compress a "3" - say 50-60% in width - so it stays a 3 - but is obviously trying to be a i or l.....

So nothing tooooooooooooo bad!

We'll see what the missus says.

I believe that there may be some new legislation.

Apparently, you as the driver are now liable for anything up to £2k, as is the person who made the plate. As the car has to pass an MOT now with a correclty spaced plate, any new plates have to have a distinguishing mark of the maker and address on them.

Just been through this with mine, as no-one will now make me one with "altered" spacing........

I can see why you want the spurious bolts in black not yellow else it would read A Loony - well almost! Rich...

If I was a rozzer a dodgily spaced plate would only give me a reason to stop you. Without I may have ignored whatever traffic naughty you just carried out in front of me.

Also, IMHO playing with the lettering identifies the driver as a to55er. Are you that desperate to be recognised? Also, you'll be more memorable if you happen to cut someone up or get into a fracass (sp?) with another car. "Yes officer, the registration was John 99" or whatever.

One of my friends had one of those 'designer' plates with a really weird font. Not so weird that you couldnt read it but very different from how it should be, looks bloody awful to be honest.

Anyway, he got stopped by the local plod and ended up with another 3 points on his licence which I thought was a bit harsh?

It would not have been for the wrong font. Number plate offences are not endorsable. He probably had some other problem that was noticed when the vehicle was stopped such as a bald tyre or dangerous part!

I agree with the no change to plate.

If you make any mistake or there's someone you don't want to see (or see you) or you get photographed by a camera..etc etc.....surely having your name on it would make it too easy to remember?

I was considering getting a private plate but with someone elses name...but then I realised it's still a defining characteristic of the car and not something that would blend in to the thousands of boring plates (as mine is now). I would rather stay incognito.

As for Italic or custom fonts....AVOID! Have they ever looked good on any car? Usually when I've seen those it can completely ruin the stylish look of an otherwise good looking car.

Rant over
