I know this has been brought up a hundred and one times here, but I can't find details of the specific act I'm after.

What act or statute allows police to speed provided it's for 'police purposes' even if they don't have their blues and twos on?

It's to settle an argument with someone and I could do with some actual evidence!

Section 87 Road Traffic Regulation Act 1984 (RTRA84) states that 'no statutory provision imposing a speed limit...shall apply to any vehicle on an occasion when it is being used for Fire Brigade, Ambulance, or Police purposes if the observance of these provisions would be likely to hinder the use of the vehicle for the purpose for which it is being used on that occasion'.

(emphasis added by me )

Note that there is no mention of whether audible or visual warning devices need to be used to claim the exemption...

Pity the Chief Constable of Lincolnshire didn't read this carefully before passing the ambulance driver's case to the CPS. This should cover his defence completely IMHO

This was in fact totally different and went along the lines of "was it an Ambulance for the purpose of the act"?

Obviously if we use common sense here, theres no way that a fully marked up "Hospital" ambulance would ever get stopped for speeding.

The Lincolnshire ambulance driver was, I believe, transporting an urgently needed liver for transplant at Addenbrokes Hospital in Cambridge when he was clocked by Gatso at 104 mph on the A1(M). He may lose his licence and his job/career. He is a fully trained ambulance driver who was in a genuine emergency situation with his blue lights on.
My niece had to have a liver transplant at that hospital as a result of a very rare blood disorder and I witnessed the dedication of not-too-well-paid members of that team.
To think some senior police officer can be so insensitive as to use a member of that team, i.e. the liver delivery ambulance driver, to make a point is a disgrace and an affront to common decency.
