We'll TVP BiB seem to be thinking along the right lines with regards to some speeding offences.

3 weeks ago I got 'caught' by a mobile camera doing 36 in a 30, the NIP arrived last week. I duly completed all the info, signed it and posted back recorded delivery.

This morning I get a 4 page letter offering me to trade my '£60 & 3 points' for '£65 and a 3hr "speed awareness scheme workshop"'.

To say I'm happy is an underestimate (clean licence right now but...).

So two things :-

1) Big thumbs up for TVP BiB
2) Anybody already been on the 'SAS' course that could give me any idea what to expect?

36 in a 30 ??

My god!

Well done for not getting the points but i would get there early as there may be about 300 attending (read. That limit is very low)

To me this shows:

1. All they are interested in is the money (they even want an extra fiver!). A speed awareness course isn't going to change the habit of a lifetime.

2. They are overwhelmed by the non-signed NIPs so this way they get the money and still look responsible.

Don't be a pussy! Send it back unsigned!

Sounds like a good idea to me. If a scrote can get community service for theft, why shouldn't otherwise law abiding drivers have this opportunity. I would back this 100% as it does show that the police do want to reduce accidents.

As for the £65 - well, i'm sure it costs a lot to put on courses like this.

And just what difference does taking the course make? Anyone done any analysis of before and after? Probably a complete waste of time.

I'm sure they do want to reduce accidents, but what has travelling at 6 mph over a certain speed limit got to do with creation of accidents? Or do you mean that the course will demonstrate better driving technique which is a better solution than just taking someone's money? I suppose it is better...in theory.

However, I'm not sure about the content of the course, but most drivers are only there because they have been caught driving over a speed limit, not necessarily because their driving skills are in need of brushing up. Anyway, I'd have thought that a racing drivers' school would be more useful if driving skill improvement was the intention.

IIRC you only get offered this for 36 mph - 35 or under and you don't get done (10%+2), 37 or over and you get ticketed. This keep sthe numbers down and makes it an experiment - and they can gain the publicity of showing that eduction is a part of the speed campaign

I don't know how much you are allowed to 'discuss' the issue of speed in such a course though - can they kick you out, and then charge you anyway?

First criteria is you MUST currently have a clean license.

Other criteria are your speed the limit road type/location in force where you were caught.

70 Limits don't count so I'd guess it only applies to around town 30's etc.
