BE BRIGHT AT NIGHT

The number of pedestrians killed on Notts roads doubled in 2002.

Twenty-eight people, including four children, died after being knocked down - the highest death toll for five years.

The previous year, the number of pedestrian deaths had fallen from 27 to 12.

More than half of those fatal accidents happened during the hours of darkness - either early in the morning, or at night.

It is for that reason that we re-launch our Be Bright at Night campaign.

And we will run it not just until the figure falls again.

We will run it until there is a downward trend in fatal accidents involving pedestrians - in other words, until there is a sustained reduction.

As always, children are the most vulnerable pedestrians.

We can't speed up the development of their judgment, nor can we make drivers more alert to their presence.

But what we can do, with the help of parents, is try to ensure that children are seen after dark.

Which is why, once again, we are giving away reflective badges, medallions and waistcoats.

The message to all parents is simple: Your children will be safer if they are seen.


Three points to make really.

1 - hmmm the number of deaths has doubled just after Nottingham installed the Cameras on the Ring road. Arn't the scmeras doing well
2 - If this campaign works, how long before the Scamera Partnership take credit for the reduction.
3 - Most people know that pedestrians have a responsibility to look after themselves. This campaign seems like the right direction.

New digital cameras now in Nottingham, campaigners claiming since speed cameras introduced there were no fatalities. I note here a change of tactic don't they usually quote KSI figures.
Interesting fatalities down, seriously injured up, cynically doesn't it cost more to look after someone that is injured than someone who is dead, perhaps this is were all the fines go

I think the cost they always quote is £1 million per road death...

Obviously the cost for an injury will vary....
