Should 20mph limits be imposed by Schools?

This question is on a poll on,

www.northantsnews.com/

Personally I don't like the question as if you say no = child killer and yes = 20 mph 'near' all schools even when school shut etc. No means of saying yes but.. or depends on...

Maybe they'll take notice of emailed comments

I think that there should be 20mph past schools but during school times ONLY! Why should I feel like an absolute criminal for speeding at 25mph past a school at 10pm at night! A lot of the time you can't speed past schools anyway they are so busy. But what really annoys me is at a localish school where to enforce this twentys plenty they have put speed cushions in, cant go more than 2mph over them!

Bollocks to this cretinology.

Put a barrier up by the school exit and teach the children the green cross code.

The American system has a lot going for it. The reduced limits apply only during drop-off and pick-up times ... and are rigourously observed (many drivers are parents too) and strictly enforced (often by peer pressure). The idea that you cannot overtake a school bus (oh, that we had clearly identifiable school buses) when it is stationary with its 'STOP' indicator out is great too.

And while I'm on my hobby-horse of other countriues great ideas on traffic control, I'm a big supported of overtaking on all sides on motorways (subject to safety considerations and with the exception of blatent 'weaving'), turning left against red from the inside lane, and traffic signals reverting to flashing amber (4-way give way) at night.

Yep I'd go with the American system as well. Though not just outside schools, I think it would be a far more sensible proposition to have adaptive speed limits everywhere.

Imagine if we could legally do say 120mph between the hours of 1am and 5am and trucks could do say 70mph between these hours.

The roads would flow much better, goods would get delivered quicker and consequently some daytime traffic would be reduced.

I say 5mph near schools. Save the children, save the children.

Now who's gonna come up with a half decent argument that one child death isn't too many? Oh except for Vinnie 'outlaw' Jones.

I hate this country. Also not had coffee yet.

I think it's an ideal form of natural selection: too thick to cross the road, you're hardly going to contribute much in your future life!

BTW- my brother got knocked over on a zebra crossing when he was 9- (didn't kill him) and since then (40 years!) I've been bailing him out of all sorts of trouble.

Why not fit kids with magnetic boots and make the kerbs outside schools, metal? That way they couldn't get across the road! This could also come in handy when they play up in the car: you could just stick them on the roof! Wouldn't work on a TVR though... and you'd have to watch out for low bridges!

Time for my tablets.

Yes but only during drop off and pick up times, after that they're fair game!

I am amazed at how many mothers drive like Colin (If you did not crash you were not going fast enough) McRae. No ! 20 Mph in built up areas is silly. Just enforcing the 30 mph limit and the police would make 1000's of arrests. Also sending in traffic warden to stop the mothers in 4x4's parking stupidly would be good.
I have to admit to driving at 15 mph on my housing estate, in order to slow everything down. There's 100's of kids playing out especially at this time of year, and unfortunately they are mostly stupid. I also make a point of running over any balls that come my way.
I have kids 10 and 7 and I hope that I have taught them to be paranoid with roads. Just because the little man is green does not mean the traffic is going to stop does it !

That's a rather extreme form of mass sterilisation isn't it?

I had a moment of clarity last night.

What process of thought occured that when pedestrians got knocked over they saw the answer as slowing down the cars with speed bumps etc (which cause extra pollution, noise, are a pain for ambulance crews) to limit the damage?

Why oh why didnt someone say lets erect railings alongside the pavement and make jaywalking illegal?

Traffic could flow, accidents down, everyone happy!

Then damage wouldnt have been reduced it would have been eliminated!

If you'd ever driven much in rural America you wouldn't. Not unless you want to sit behind lines of school buses belching out carcinogenic filth while they trundle along miles of single-carriageway roads at 25mph with "No Overtaking" lines down the middle, and the only time they stop is when they pick up/drop children & their "Stop" lights are flashing. Horrid things.

Err,
They have variable speedlimits & Cameras on the M25, now, as I'm not a pen pushing pillock, I reckon it'd be easy to set a safe limit at school times & higher outside and why not even higher still at 1a.m. to 6a.m. ?? But get a ppp involved and anything intelligent and worth doing won't get done
